Mad Men billboards offend New Yorkers

It's easy to see why Mad Men billboards in New York have attracted controversy.

It was some weeks ago when posters for the new season of Mad Men created headlines, due to a similarity to The Falling Man documentary, which looked at the death of a man who fell from the World Trade Centre in  the 9/11 tragedy.

The poster is a variation on the show’s opening titles.

But now that billboards have appeared in New York, including one reportedly near the site known as ‘Ground Zero’, it’s easy to see why locals have been offended.

“The image of Don Draper tumbling through space has been used since the show began in 2007 to represent a man whose life is in turmoil,” cable network AMC said.

“The image used in the campaign is intended to serve as a metaphor for what is happening in Don Draper’s fictional life and in no way references actual events,” the statement added.

  1. Americans are way to precious since 9/11. They need to get a life and realise its just a poster promoting a tv show, not suicide. Americans have always been a bit weird they just dont get it.

  2. How is it distasteful?
Because no one ever fell to their deaths until 9/11, actually I don’t think we even knew about graavity before 2001.

  3. @ s5000 — I googled ‘mad men subway graffiti’ and laughed at the range of clever alterations that have been done to this ad. Many were much better than the original.

  4. These ads were also in subway stations… I invite you to google ‘mad men subway graffiti’

Funny what people with a Sharpie and a blank canvas can come up with while waiting for a train.
