Those men in a tinnie, John Doyle and Tim Flannery, return to ABC1 this Sunday night.

Two On The Great Divide is a new travel series that takes them from the Great Dividing Range from Victoria to the Torres Strait.

In the tradition of Two Men In A Tinnie and Two In The Top End, John Doyle and Tim Flannery are off on another adventure. In this three-part series, the intrepid pair travel by car, by foot, by boat and by air, exploring the Great Dividing Range from Victoria up through New South Wales and Queensland, finishing in the Torres Strait.

John and Tim’s journey encompasses many stories about the range; from the geological formation, the fossils that lie witness to a deep past, the human interaction with the range and the environmental changes along the way.

In each episode there are moments of adventure, moments when John and Tim excitedly dip into the fossil or historical records, and other times when they simply revel in quirky Australian characters.

But it’s not all spectacular scenery and beautiful vistas. True to the title, John and Tim also set out to investigate some of Australia’s ‘Great Divides’ in society, including debates over mining, food security, land ownership, patriotism, climate, censorship, brumbies and wealth distribution. They also debate some less weighty issues: Melbourne versus Sydney; hippies versus hoons; tidy versus untidy towns.

Most strenuously of all, Tim and John attempt to climb the big six peaks – William, Bogong, Kosciuszko, Warning, Bartle Frere and Cornwallis, with varying degrees of success.

In tonight’s episode, they start the journey at Dinosaur Cove in Western Victoria to find out how the Great Dividing Range was formed. Next, they travel to the Grampians to climb Mt William, and search for gold in Bendigo. In Daylesford, John has his tarot read while Tim has a man-facial. A drive through Marysville reminds them of the extremes of this continent and the lurking dangers of natural disasters. They complete the first leg of their journey taking on Victoria’s highest peak – Mt Bogong.

  1. Congratulations once again to the ABC – I seem to recall that I was once a disgruntled citizen re. ABC … what a turnaround in the last few years or so; great programs, brilliant presenters!

    Both Tim & John are dead-set national treasures – however that won’t stop us levelling ’em if they start to get big-headed about it.

    Whoever came up with the concept here ‘geo-social’ ramblings; take a bow – brilliant idea.

    Please round these two up again to explore Manning Clark’s take on Gracchus Babeuf’s vision of ‘A Republic of Equals’ vis-a-vis Australia … our only long-term salvation.

  2. Can someone let Tim know that my roof is leaking. How does he have time to make a travel show, when he’s supposed to be saving the world, at tax-payers expense? Can we have a refund please.
