Crowd boos on Australia’s Got Talent

Controversy hits Australia's Got Talent tonight when the crowd boos the judges. Spoilers.

Spoiler: Tonight on Australia’s Got Talent the audience boos the judges as they lock horns with an overly-confident performer.

The act is forthright in his opinions and his arrogance upstages his performance.

The frustration from the judges is evident and they give back as good as they get.

Kyle Sandilands says: “I want you to get into this competition because I want you to then have the newspapers and magazines of this country write complete and utter lies about you and see how you handle it.”

But there is support for the act from the audience.

It’s a performance that is likely to trigger some debate -which, like it or not, is what the show needs right now.

AGT airs tonight without the competition from The Voice which may help it lift its concerning audience numbers.

  1. Is it Australia’s got talent or Australia’s got attitude?
In a show that is meant to be about talent, using a ‘cocky attitude’ to deny someone is absurd. He came on stage full and left empty. The judges should be ashamed for such a thing. The judges have such a power trip that has infested them like a poison. They did not even try to get where he was coming from, the damage was already done, ego’s bruised.”Pretend the judges aren’t there” he was connecting with the audience, a critical attribute for a performer. OK, that dig at the boy band thing struck a chord understandably but it was funny. Suck it up princess, its not about you. A bit of a cop out there ‘Karl’, and finally what a disappointment, what happened to a fair go Australia? Is this show about talent? Well I saw heaps of talent squashed by the vanity of waning credibility. Judges used to be fun to watch. I will now record the show and FF the jibber jabber including the ads that the show relies on.

  2. It’s Australia’s Got Talent not Australia’s Got Judges.

Note that the judge that has had the most time in Australia actually understood the larrikin nature of the contestant while the other two, who have been overseas for most/all of their lives did not see that.

Australians have a way of talking to each other which is different to those of the Brits.

When the contestant came out and told the crowd he was performing for them, well of course you are performing for the crowd. The crowd (or wider audience) are the people who are going to pay to go to your gigs, watch your videos on youtube, buy your CDs.

The two long time foreign-living judges looked like their egos had been severely bruised, like they had never encountered a “she’ll be right” type Aussie attitude before (which for many a foreigner can be seen as condescending).

Kyle obviously has and understands that.

Australia may have talent, but we also have judges with large egos.

  3. McFadden to me, appeared like a childish sook during that. He’s broken the golden rule of television and let his ego get in front of audience reaction. The audience in the auditorium seemed to really like the contestant. That should have been a clue for McFadden that the audience at home in their loungerooms would also like him too. It doesn’t matter who it is, be it a so called judge or a contestant really doesn’t want to offend the viewer at home. That attitude makes anything you do or say irrelevant in their eyes.

  4. I think that the situation could have been handled a lot better on both sides, the quip about not aiming “to be in a boy band” was a very low blow and as much as i don’t like boy bands or Brian, you don’t demean their life’s work to their face on TV, especially if they are the judge.

I believe a simple “Perhaps your right, my opening remark was meant in fun but was misinterpreted, I’m sorry if i offended any of you” and the whole thing would have been a non-event. But he chose to bite back and show his arrogance and disdain for the judges. I rarely agree with the judges decisions but this time i do.

  5. This is where McFaddon’s & Minogue’s lack of professionalism shone through and why neither of them have an act anymore. Rather than recognising Owen’s talent, they made it personal instead. I think Kyle’s comment (besides the personal tangential overlay) was spot on, and I never agree with him. Must reassess that…

You can’t tell me, in all the years these judges have been around that they haven’t come across talented arrognant narcisists on & off stage. It’s show business for goodness sake, if you didn’t have an ego you wouldn’t foist yourself onto an unsuspecting public.

McFaddon’s body language said it all and the fact that he doesn’t respect the audiences opinion, he said as much; to paraphrase: “it’s all about the Judges”. Australia’s (hardly) Got Talent: RIP.

  6. Thanks MuchoTB for the link to the clip. I have never watched an entire segment of this show. I am surprised at the informality of the judges attire – the poxy set and the unnceccessary cutaways of Grant. I have to say that the ginormous egos of Brian and Kyle (although he was the least offensive – i can’t believe i am saying that, of the three) and Dani, turned what seemed like a really good musical audition into something petty and dismissive. The laconic and Aussie deadpan delivery style of the contestant’s personality was interpeted as rude and arrogant. Dani’s loaded question about him being 28 and not having made it – was a thinly veiled attempt at dismissing him for having the balls to be himself. I thought the show was about having talent – they don’t have to like and mentor them, ala X factor or The voice, so i’m on the side of the contestant. His response about travelling was a good one and a repsectful one, rather than the defensiveness of Brian and Kyle. Andrew Wishart on X factor was 40 – there are reasons other than attitude as to why people with talent don’t make it.

  7. I was on the judges side too. However the situation could not have been handled worse. They managed to get the whole audience against them.
He just came off as a p***k to me. I could see it was an attempt at humour, but it had a snarky undertone to it and that’s what annoyed me.

But then, all is not lost of course. Promo for next week, He comes back! Shocking…
It’s getting harder and harder to watch because of how set up its coming across as now. The girl’s parents are in Malaysia? Oh you have a question about them Kyle, even though you haven’t asked others about their parents? Oh Grant, you just Happen to have her father’s Skype details, and have him on the laptop now? Ah yeah, course you do.

  8. I agree with MillerT1 and craige288. For anyone who wants to see the clip, type in Owen Campbell Australia’s Got Talent into youtube.

I personally thought the guy was just joking around and that Brian and Dannii seriously misjudged the situation. The crowd was on the guy’s side, and rightfully so. He’s better than this show, if he does indeed audition again and makes it through to the finals I bet the Australian public will rally behind him

    1. I sided with Dannii and Brian. It was indicative of attitude problems and they should have been left at the door for someone of his age. You would only see worse to come. No room for egos sorry.

  9. I don’t think the judges handled the situation very well. The guy wasn’t off his head and I don’t think it is out of the norm if he thinks that the best way for him to perform is to forget about the fact that he is being judged and that there are judges in the room. Isn’t this event tonight precisely why so many people are leaving AGT for The Voice?

  10. Brian, I’ve loved everything you’ve done to date but to reject such talent because he had a strong personality is just wrong and nothing to do with this show. You know the crowd loved him and you should have supported them. Not only that but you stupidly supported a talentless act straight after (Indi). Grow some balls mate, this show ain’t about you.

  11. The promo at the end of the show tonight showed him coming back for another audition next week so I’m guessing he’ll end up getting through.

  12. Gezzz Dani , that was harsh, your normally a good judge of talent, you are normally so supportive ,you encourage an uplift, the only one on this show that does.,The dude wasnt cocky at all, He was good old Ozzie relaxed, actually laid back.whats Kyle on, hes hisses at the world an gets away with it.This guy had talent, His song was awesome. What did he do that was so terriblly wrong, say he wasnt a boy band. what is apparent is Australians got talent ,2 of the 3 stars have to much arrogance an self importance, youve got no show matching the Voice, not with that attitude.Im going to say Dani, you just had a bad moment.Ok, cause I wouldnt watch the program if you werent on it, you differently stepped out of the box tonight. Ive always admired your kind an supportive nature, it looks good with your stunning looks. Those other two, I felt you should have gone to bat for that young singer, rather than support them. Kyle drums up promos by been ugly, hes like a porkchop on heat for it. sizzling an wiggling Its not your style Dani..You should find that young man an find out what hes all about,I saw talent I didnt see cocky at all. An McFadden lost interest way before this young man sang his song, because he disliked the build up an descide not to like the song or the person that’s wrong. its about Talent, Dani im really disappointed for you…goodluck keeping this program afloat on your own.
