Dance Academy tragedy to rock teen audience

Young fans of ABC3's Dance Academy are about to be confronted by another challenging storyline. Some Spoilers.

Spoiler: Young fans of ABC3’s Dance Academy are about to be confronted by another challenging storyline.

In tonight’s episode, tragedy strikes the students of Dance Academy.

The teen soap, which has won several awards in Australia and overseas, is no stranger to handling weighty themes with sensitivity.

Producer Joanna Werner tells TV Tonight, it was important to approach the subject in a way that the audience would respect.

“It was not an easy decision for us to embark on this storyline but we feel that it is one that is essential to tell. Dance Academy is a teen series about growing up and going through new experiences, good and bad. The first time that you go through an event like this it really shapes you forever and we believe it is an important coming of age story to tell.”

“For all of our characters this is a life changing occurrence. All feel the incredibly sad impact of this tragedy but are able to come together and help each other through. Ultimately we really want some hope to be taken from this storyline: that even when the very worst happens there is a way to get through it. And for our audience to see how incredibly important friendship is in these difficult times in your life.”

She declined to detail which character would be at the centre of the storyline but the ensemble, which consists of Tara, Kat, Sammy, Abigail, Christian, Ethan, Lucy, Ben, Grace and Ollie, will be heavily impacted.

“Because the character in question has such a close relationship with all of the lead characters in the series, each one is impacted significantly. Each deals with it in their own way but ultimately it is their friendship which will get them through.”

Dance Academy airs at 6:30pm tonight on ABC3.

  1. Pretty disappointed by this, I saw the character as a positive fictional role model that dealt with some pretty progressive issues (by Aussie soap standards) that could’ve been further explored. Reading the comments on blogs, it seems most people feel cheated by this sudden tragedy. The show won’t be the same.

  2. Amazing episode!
Affected me as an adult so would be interesting to see how the younger audience will handle it. But great of the ABC to show the kids help line number at the end of the episode.
Cannot wait for the final 2 episodes next week

  3. As someone who’s found myself quite involved with the show, I’m concerned about what’s going to happen to a favourite.
I believe this is a shining example of a quality Australian-produced show; in fact I think it’s the best program the ABC3 offers.
I was hoping that if they scored a third series, the whole excellent cast would be back, but that doesn’t look like it will be happening now.
I do hope it’s handled in a believable way, like the other big issues they have run with.
