Gold Logie showdown: Carrie Bickmore

In just two years Carrie Bickmore has risen from Best New Talent to Gold Logie nominee. Can she upstage more seasoned performers?

The final Gold Logie nominee in TV Tonight’s “showdown” series is The Project‘s Carrie Bickmore.

In just two years Bickmore has risen from Best New Talent (Female) to Gold nominee.

“I would have been delighted just to be up for the Best Presenter category to be completely honest. So to be up for Gold just blows my mind. But more than anything for our show to be up. You know more than anyone how hard Dave, Charlie, myself, Craig and the producers work on that show. So to hear we are up for Most Popular and Most Oustanding was such a great acknowledgement. We’re all very excited about that,” she said.

Bickmore has a loyal following, especially amongst those who identify with her as confident and creditable. An outpouring of support followed the death of her husband in late 2010, but whilst she acknowledges a generosity of spirit, it is work and family that motivates her.

“It’s really touching but I don’t really think about it that much to be honest. Just getting through the day and getting to work is as much as my brain allows. But it’s nice to feel that the show connects.

“That’s why it’s lovely to know we have The Project loyalists.

“With everything I’ve been through it’s probably what enables me to keep working.”

How do you rate your chances?
“I didn’t rate them very highly at all but a friend texted me to say I was second favourite. I don’t bet ever but I’ve decided to put some money on and we’ll see what happens! Last time I didn’t rate myself for Best New Talent and I won so anything can happen and you’ve got to have a bit of faith.”

Who is your main competition?
“Karl is the favourite and he won last year so clearly he has a massive amount of support. Like me he’s on everyday so he’s in people’s minds. I think Hamish is tough to beat as well. People love that kid and I tell you what I told my friends ‘You cannot vote for Hamish!’”

Who is the dark horse?
“I reckon maybe Asher Keddie. I think she’s brilliant and I think people absolutely love what she does.”

What does it mean to win a Logie?
“I sat next to Rove so many times when he won a Logie and I thought ‘That is just such an awesome acknowledgement and it’s so flattering.’ I never ever thought I would be in the category let alone win one, so if I do win it would be definitely a highlight.”

What was the highlight of your 2011 TV year?
“Going over for the Royal Wedding was awesome. I had no interest in going and then when I got there I got completely swept up in it. To be somewhere where every single media outlet in the world was, was a lovely event.

“Covering the 9/11 story ten years on was incredible too. It was one of the greatest things I’ve done in my career.”

Why should viewers vote for you?
“Because I love my job and love working with Charlie and Dave. So if they love The Project they should vote for me!”
