EXCLUSIVE: In a stunning move to try and attract younger viewers, TV Week organisers have signed Kyle and Jackie O as host of the 54th Logie Awards.
The controversial pair, fresh from a breach of the Commercial Radio Code of Conduct, are planning to use the night as a ‘mea culpa’ with the industry and demonstrate they can help make TV’s ‘Night of Nights’ a success story.
“Logies nights have always had a way of getting people talking,” a source told TV Tonight, “whether its Bert & Muhammed Ali, Karl getting tipsy or kd lang singing up a storm. We think nabbing Kyle & Jackie O will be a win / win. Everybody will be on the edge of their seats!”
Organisers aren’t fazed by the terrible ratings for Kyle & Jackie O’s Night with the Stars, pointing to the awards’ longevity with the public.
But the move is already attracting criticism with an online campaign due to launch, calling on sponsors to cancel their support for the Logies.
Holden, GIO Insurance, Telstra, Mazda, Toys R Us, Qantas and Mitsubishi were all said to be scrambling to withdraw sponsorship of the Logies, fearing a similar backlash from the one that engulfed radio station 2DAY FM.
Last week the media watchdog The Australian Communications and Media Authority declared unprecedented rules for the radio station in the wake of Sandilands’ “fat slag” comments against journalist Alison Stephenson. But the rules don’t apply to Sandilands’ TV appearances on either Australia’s Got Talent or the Logies.
Asked whether he approved of Sandilands as Logies host, ACMA Chairman Chris Chapman said, “What I think of the Logies host is irrelevant.”
Communications Minister Stephen Conroy said broadcasting rules for choosing Logies hosts would have to be beefed up in the wake of the decision by TV Week.
“Fines would fall into that category. I’d give that serious Logies consideration,” he said.
Magda Szubanski, who was the target of an earlier Sandilands’ barb, tweeted that the choice was “Enough to make me go back in the closet.”
Yumi Stynes tweeted that “Jackie O is the Kiss of Death. They should have asked me and Corporal Roberts-Smith to host!”
George Negus dismissed the idea, before adding that Kyle was “probably a dud root anyway.”
But 2011 Gold Logie winner Karl Stefanovic was in favour of the idea.
“I’ll drink to that!” he joked.

Very good David.
You got me Big Time:):):)
Kyle to host the Logie Awards??? Well I Won’t be watching then!!!!!!
They’d be better hosting the Walkley’s surely? After all, they are a class act. Not. 🙂
Bravo David.
You got me good – damn good.
I was wondering why Nine would hire a contracted Seven personality – but then I remembered they had non-Nine personality Gretel Killeen a few years back.
But what should have clued me in was the Yumi Stynes and George Negus quotes.
Thanks for the egg on my face.
Loved it.
Kyle and Jackie O acknowledged the gag on radio this morning. Kyle said he was getting weird texts about it yesterday, LOL. Thanks for being good sports, guys!
Congratulations David, you fooled a lot of us and certainly got us stirred up !
You always have the only plausible April Fools stuff of any site I visit. Good work.
A pity. If this had been true, it could have meant an evening of train-wreck television at it’s very best.
But what if turns out to be true??? Nah very unlikely.
I take my hat off to you David! That was a goodie!
Ha!
I thought it was an excellent idea..
What’s more disturbing is that if it were fact, I wouldn’t be surprised. At all.
Excellent work, David! Well played. Got me good and proper. You must have really enjoyed watching those comments roll in.
Never have I been so relieved to discover that this was an April Fool’s joke.
Reading the pre-midday comments also highlights the depth of antipathy towards those two amog the regulars here.
I’m sure that’s the second time you’ve fooled me on April Fools day, David. That’ll teach me to not keep track of dates. 😛
I always write these to begin very convincingly, but become more and more daft as the article progresses. By the time you get to the end there should be no doubt it’s a joke.
you always give us a good one mate
I honestly think I fall for your April Fool’s Joke every year – I must remember to read a whole article haha! Well done again!
He he….yep….I was fooled…I believed it ….anything is possible on TV these days… 😆
But I would not normally have read a story about these two….just checked because I saw 77 posts….I thought that was the joke at first…
lol. although for the first time ever i was going to watch the logies.
praise the lord david lol
