Nine gets green-light for Olympics in 3D

ACMA gives Nine the OK to broadcast London Olympics highlights in 3D.

The Nine Network has been given the green-light to broadcast Olympics highlights in 3D, under a trial license from the media watchdog, The Australian Communications and Media Authority.

The license allows for 3D broadcasts in Adelaide, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney from July 16.

It follows earlier 3D broadcasts by State of Origin and the AFL Grand Final. But ACMA has been concerned about misleading statements from a number of retailers during these trials.

ACMA Chairman, Chris Chapman, said viewers should be able to view the trial if they have a 3D television.

“Viewers need to be aware these broadcasts are temporary trials of the 3D TV format and that the long term technology is still developing,” he said.

Nine is yet to announce full details about its 3D plans.

The Olympic Games take place between 27 July and 12 August 2012.

  1. @Steve

I had a look at Foxtel’s 3D channel on my non-3D TV and it showed two half screens (with a swashed picture) of the show – I assume one half was different to the other and then the TV does the work joining them together making it 3D.

  2. Great news for those of us with 3D TVs.
It will be interesting to see the technical details – is it going to be a separate channel like 2010 with the not-so-widely-compatible MPEG4 encoding?

  3. 3D TV is, let’s say premature, but good on Nine for giving it a crack. Meanwhile, the sporting league with the world’s largest TV audience will be shown delayed in SD by Ten.

  4. Pfft , really …. i wonder if its being sponsored by Panasonic or Sony. Maybe Harvey Norman is a major sponsor. All designed to get the public to buy 3D TVs. scam.

  5. Now I’m going out to buy a 3D set… yeah right.

Seriously why waste the time with 3D when they barely use HD as it is, can’t wait to see the 10s of people who will actually watch it in 3D.
