Popstars judge misses out on The Voice

Sometimes not even being a judge from one Reality show is enough to win you a place as a contestant on another.

“Are you mental?” singer Shauna Jensen asked the judges on The Voice.

None of them had turned their chairs after she sang an impressive rendition of (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman last night.

“Seriously, ok…. I thought I was damn good.”

So too did the audience. But that’s all part of the drama of Nine’s new show.

Jensen missed out on her chance to be selected for the show. What the judges probably didn’t realise was that Jensen has herself been a judge on a TV talent show, having joined Molly Meldrum and Christine Anu as a judge for Seven’s Popstars Live in 2004.

But sometimes not even judges make the cut.

Seal told Jensen she didn’t quite hit the ‘event-moments’ in the song, but congratulated her on her voice.

It was one of the show’s more awkward moments, especially after a contestant on Australia’s Got Talent was at odds with judges last week.

But Delta Goodrem rescued the moment by giving her a hug and commiserating over her Jensen’s daughter also missing out on being selected.

Even the sour stuff ends on an upbeat note in this show.

  1. I thought she was good but the start didn’t impress me much – Certainly not as great as she thought she was.

As for her attitude – I was a little disappointed she didn’t get through until I heard her talk about how great her own performance was!

  2. And they had a whinge about it on Today Tonight. I don’t see the problem, she’s made her mark in the industry. She hasn’t gained or lost anything so I don’t see why Today Tonight had to cover it, only to take a shot at The Voice and Nine.

  3. I’m no expert, but really, if you were going to ‘make it’ as a singer in the entertainment industry, you probably would by the time you are 25. Anyone older than that is fooling themselves. You’re a backing singer for a reason, you know. (Disclosure: I couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket).

  4. … yet she gets an article all to herself, while all the others that can sing much better but had no personality have already been forgotten. win-ning.

it was refreshing to see a competitor with some trace of personality even if it was unlikeable. When Delta went for the hug you could see she thought it was cendecending, she obviously had more to say and wanted a fight. her brashness brought out the best in atleast one of the judges (seal) giving advise worth listening to. how many times have we heard the judges say the same things to every competitor?

  5. Miss Jensen has a nice enough voice but her attitude left me cold. The spirit of the show so far has been really good and she ruined that last night. I would have thought that being in the industry for so long she would be able to handle rejection with at least a little bit of good grace. Nice example for her daughter.

  6. After being a judge herself, she should’ve known not to sing that particular song. If you’re gonna do it, you have to do it extra well. Sure she can belt out a number but aside from that I totally agreed with Seal. Shawna was totally arrogant with that “don’t you know who I am” attitude. Could you imagine what she would’ve been like had she got through. Diva!!!!!

  7. Regardless of how good she is or thinks she is anyone who had a single in the late 70’s and has not made a mark has probably missed it and perhaps her attitude may may have contributed.

  8. You can’t tell me that the producers don’t have some influence over the judges decisions. There have been several singers who should have been chosen on their voice alone, Shauna being one of them.

  9. Shauna Jensen, Mahalia Barnes, Matt Hetherington all of these people already have careers as entertainers. I too am confused about the rules of this shoiw, isn’t the idea to find a “new” voice ?

    1. The Voice does not have rules against professionals, in fact there are more pros than amateurs. I suppose it is about people feeling like they want to see their potential realised and feel this has not happened.

  10. I am a huge fan of Shauna Jensen – i have a cd of hers, and several tracks she recorded with various DJ’/Producers – she is a gay icon in Sydney. Shauna is a great teacher and performer and possesses one powerhouse voices. I am therefore conflicted as to whether she should have been allowed to enter the comp. So too, Mahalia Barnes – amazing singer – already has released an album and toured extensively – have i missed something about the general brief of a show like this? I thought they were always about breaking new talent.

Shauna runs rings vocally around a Delta or a Danni or a Mel B or a J-Lo – and yes, the fact that she appeared as a judge on another talent quest, and released her first single in 1979!!!! Bizarre rules to this show!
