Who will play Julian Assange?

Which young actor will be TEN's choice for the lead role in the Julian Assange telemovie?

Tomorrow TEN will announce its cast for Underground: The Julian Assange Story.

The telemovie focusses on a young Assange, who at the age of 18 allegedly hacked the CIA website. This photo was taken in 1995.

Produced by Matchbox Pictures, the role will likely lift the profile of the young actor who wins the role, especially as it could attract overseas interest.

So who will it be? Casting is understood to have included an overseas search -but given the role is a young Aussie surely the solution lays closer to home.

Blake Davis would be a good call given his work in Tangle and The Slap -the latter was also a Matchbox Pictures production. Last year he was nominated for the IF Awards ‘Out of the Box’ award for rising stars.

Ben Schumann was also impressive in SLiDE.

Or could it make a star of an unknown young actor?

Earlier this year Programming Chief David Mott told TV Tonight, “The script is now finalised, it jumps off the page and we love it. Now we’re in the process of casting, and we’ve put it far and wide in terms of the getting the calibre of a marquee name.

“But remember you’re talking about a young Julian Assange.”

Despite the right hair colour, it isn’t expected to be Josh Thomas, who is comedian rather than actor.

“I can’t see Josh Thomas as Julian Assange!” Mott laughed.

Any other suggestions?
