Another cycling event is coming to SBS TWO, this time the key race in the lead up to theTour de France , the Critérium du Dauphiné, will be live on SBS for the first time next month.

The eight stage race will feature Cadel Evans in what will be his final event before he begins his Tour de France title defence later that month. Evans finished second in the Critérium du Dauphiné in 2011 behind Bradley Wiggins from Team Sky, who will also be competing in this year’s race.

The Critérium du Dauphiné will feature all of the teams that will contest the Tour de France, including Australia’s first professional cycling team, Orica-GreenEDGE. The Alpine race is known for its climbs and will cover a distance of 1,052km. The only Australian to win the race is Phil Anderson who did so in 1985.

SBS’s coverage will be hosted by Michael Tomalaris with SBS Cycling Analyst and former professional cyclist David McKenzie. Commentary will be provided by Matt Keenan.

I don’t like Sport. Hate it on TV. But I love the Tour de France on SBS. You can invest in it, it’s not manipulative and you get to see beautiful parts of the world with out being rushed about it. Love it, can’t wait. I hope they keep Gabriel Gate’s vingette’s as well they’re superb. Well done SBS! (again) Bring on the Critérium du Dauphiné! Vive le vélo!!

Good stuff. I wasn’t a cycling fan before but watching Le Tour de France with Phil and Paul on SBS has converted me. It’s still really only the tours that I enjoy watching.

SBS has certainly ramped up (no pun intended) its cycling coverage since Cadel Evans won Tour de France and the establishment of GreenEDGE cycling team, both in 2011. This year SBS showed more events than ever before, some on free-to-air for the very first time: Paris-Nice, Paris-Roubaix, Liège – Bastogne – Liège, Giro d’Italia, with Critérium du Dauphiné, Tour of California, and Tour de France still to come. Good news for cycling fans.
