Phillip Phillips wins American Idol

Phillip Phillips has been crowned the winner of American Idol, defeating Jessica Sanchez.

Phillip Phillips has been crowned the winner of American Idol 2012.

He defeated Jessica Sanchez for the win, with more than 132 million votes recorded -an Idol record.

The finale included performances from John Fogerty, Rhianna, Neil Diamond, Aerosmith and Jennifer Lopez, plus a (very staged) wedding proposal from former contestant Ace Young to Diana DeGarmo.

  1. There is some flack being directed at the program today for leaving out the tribute to Donna Summer – and I did feel like it was a glaring omission – not knowing that they had pre-recorded a duet with Jessica and Kristin Chenoweth, as well as fly in Gloria Gaynor, Thelma Houston and others for a Donna Summer track, but neither was shown and the old ‘time constraints’ used as the excuse – yet there was lots of filler in the 2 hr show. For middle aged folk like me, there is a thrill to seeing John Fogerty and Chaka and Neil et al, but for Gen Y – it must seem odd to have the finalists sing songs that many have never heard and artists that are hardly hip any more – and they wonder why the telecast was one third down in numbers on last year.

  2. Watched it now, I really loved the duets featuring John Fogerty and Jennifer Holliday!

It actually was a great finale, except for the outdated medley’s performed by the remaining contestants.

Not surprised by the result, but actually happy with it for once as Phillip has such a unique style. His winning moment was truly memorable. Good luck to him!

  3. For me., Joshua was the standout followed by Jessica. I like Phillip – but he has a way to go to be a bona fide performer – his voice is interesting and yes he is cute (Kris Allen, Lee Dewyze, Scotty McCreery pattern…) If Joshua doesn’t get a deal straight up, i’d be surprised. I also liked Elise – very Renee Geyer in stature, style and attitude. I really enjoyed Season 11, and hope J-Lo returns – somebody wake up Steven and give Randy some new lines (Ryan subtle hints – no)
The withdrawal symptoms have begun! The Voice, X Factor……roll on.

  4. Is it just me or does effectively the same person win Idol every year. When they grow up and go a bit country they go on to win America’s Got Talent too.

  5. You know what its been an awesome season of Idol and the best person won. I was rooting for Jessica but she didn’t have a chance against Phillip. I personally think they will both be big winners out of this.

In saying this it was a strange finale to watch. I don’t know why but i didn’t really enjoy the finale unlike past ones.

  6. For the 900th time, you can’t expect David to wait until people get home from work, do the shopping, pick up the kids, go out for dinner and then watch their recordings. Once it airs its news and up it goes. Always been that way.

Fwiw, Phillip was always going to win IMO, he and Elise were my favourite voices but Elise’s attitude did her in.

Finale was bizairre to watch, Chaka Khan was drunk or high or something, sounded just awful and what the heck was Fantasia wearing?? Reckon Dicko would have something to say about that outfit…..!!

  7. I’ll be honest, I’d have probably fast-forwarded most of this anyway – there’s so much padding and hot air!

But, it’d have been nice for it to be in spoiler tags for those planning to watch it when they got home from work.

    Glad Phillip won, though!

  8. Awesome, so glad he won, when he performed you could feel every word he sang. Jessica is a great talent, but needs a few years to learn how to become a true artist.

  9. Awww man!! I thought this would at least be under spoiler tags!!

(No one complain that I should not have been online, it’s very boring here at work. Couldn’t help it!)
