Renewed: Auction Room

ABC staff in Tasmania concerned about local production get some good news.

ABC observational series Auction Room presented by William McInnes has been renewed for a second season.

The news was buried deep in an article in The Australian in which ABC Managing Director Mark Scott told a Senate Estimates communications committee a second series would go ahead.

It follows concerns over ABC productions in Tasmania.

A petition of hundreds of signatures in support of continued local production had been received by new ABC chairman Jim Spigelman.

Auction Room had not attracted “stellar” ratings, said Scott, but was enough to commission another series.

Last Sunday night the show pulled 235,00 viewers.

There are 4 more episodes in the current season.

  1. I’ve only seen it once, can’t even remember when it’s on, except it clashes with something else I like. However, I enjoyed it – it could be on at a better time.

As for the ABC justifying it – it would be very cheap to make, William McInnes is a very engaging personality, and you have to program something in that slot. Which is better, something home-made or yet another repeat of an ancient British comedy???

  2. How could the ABC possibly justify this – I’m all for taking risks on programs, but clearly this didn’t work and didn’t resonate with the audience.
