Jennifer Hudson will join Season Two of musical drama Smash in a multiple episode arc.

Hudson will play Veronica Moore, a Tony Award winning stage actress who tangles with the players of Smash‘s fictional musical Bombshell based on the life of Marilyn Monroe.

“Her character will represent someone who reached their Broadway dream but also paid a price for it,” said NBC exec Robert Greenblatt.

This will mark Hudson’s first professional role since her former brother-in-law was convicted of murdering her mother, brother and nephew in 2008.

The American Idol graduate also won an Oscar for her role in Dreamgirls.
