Karise makes chart history

The Voice winner Karise Eden has broken ARIA Chart history by having 4 of the top 5 positions -as The Voice dominates.

The Voice winner Karise Eden has broken ARIA Chart history by having 4 of the top 5 positions:

Eden also has three debuts in the top five.

1. Stay With Me Baby Karise Eden (New)
2. Hallelujah Karise Eden
3. I Was Your Girl Karise Eden (New)
4. Beautiful Sarah de Bono (New)
5. You Won’t Let Me Karise Eden (New)

The last artist to enjoy any kind of success close to this was The Beatles -of course as vinyl 45s and physical sales, rather than digital downloads.

The impact of Nine’s talent show is staggering. There are 16 songs by the 4 Voice finalists in the Top 50, including 8 by Eden, plus tracks by Delta Goodrem and Keith Urban.

Meanwhile Eden will be performing songs from her debut album on A Current Affair tonight.

  1. Just another nail in the coffin of the music industry, making it harder for real artists who’ve genuinely worked hard to succeed and get noticed.

(Sorry to join the legion of sledgehammers but I’m passionate about music and TV, and The Voice et al are doing more harm than good.)

  2. Does anyone who visits this site have anything nice or positive to say about anything or anyone? From what I’ve observed over a long period of time, is that the vast majrity of comments on this site are made by people who have nothing better to do with their time than slag someone or something off. Why can’t we celebrate this as a good news story?

    1. I agree with you about sledging anonymously from behind the net, which is why I added registration earlier this year (doesn’t stop it but I hope it diminishes it). However, I don’t believe such negativity is exclusive to this site. Yahoo, NineMSN, News Ltd, Twitter etc are all weighted to negative forums. For that matter so is talkback radio. That said, I think passion and seeking out television forums to engage in discussion is a positive step. The opposite -apathy- is a much bigger threat to networks.

Looking at the way the numbers stack up, most people who visit here actually don’t participate actively in comments. But readers are very loyal here, most visiting several times a day, week in, week out.

Karise and the show’s singers have done remarkably well, but I agree parallels to Beatles sales is an imbalance.

  3. Agree with John Jackson totally. Some of these singers entered the Aria Charts on one 2 minute performance. They don’t even have to record and release music anymore. It’s there instantly.

  4. @John Jackson, spot on, totally agree with you.

I must be the only person in Australia to dislike her voice. I find her borderline unpleasant to listen to and her version of the great “Hallelujah” is horrendous.

  5. That is just ridiculous that they allow the performances from the show to chart. They were only available from iTunes, and by buying the songs from there it counted as two votes for the singer. If they had run a similar system with Australian Idol, X Factor, etc then this wouldn’t be a first.

So whilst it is has been a dream for many musicians to get signed, and enter the ARIA charts, what they have allowed here has made a mockery of the whole system. Just by appearing on the The Voice and singing, you have basically made it to the charts, without ever being signed whether through a major label or independent release.

  6. The ARIA charts have been a joke since before 2005 and are rarely a measure of anything other than fleeting tween impulse. Right now, Karise Eden could cough for 3:52 and they’d buy it.

  7. @CD

Whoops my bad. I shouldn’t have written ‘know’.. I should have said “from what my mother told me” as she was resident in our house who watched the show. Obviously her attention dropped out from time to time

  8. @steve sydney

    Originals are;
    3. I Was Your Girl (Co-written with her half sister)
    5. You Won’t Let Me (not sure of details)

But agreed I hope Universal gives them at least a little cut but I doubt it.

  9. MuchoTB – Not necessarily, as you can see from the charts, her songs have been at/near the top for a few weeks running.

Such amazing news, she is an exceptional talent.

  10. Correction to my previous comment, the No.3 song was indeed written by Karise Eden, No.5 is her ‘Winner’s Single”. No.1 is a cover version

  11. 2steve sydney – you “know” No. 1 & 3 are her original songs? No. 3 is an original song, yes, but not written by her (her “winner’s single”), but No. 1 ‘Stay With Me Baby’ is a song from the 60’s which has been recorded previously by Bette Midler and Duffy to name just two.

  12. I didn’t follow much of the series but I do know that No.1 and No.3 are her original songs (she wrote them?) which proves she’s got staying power.

Just hope Universal Records is sharing the royalties appropriately…

  13. The ARIA charts are not as reputable as they used to be due to commercialisation and methods of collation. Digital sales are also an inaccurate measure of downloads as only a small percentage of all digital downloads in Australia are accounted for. Where as physical sales were accumulated from the majority of music retailers.
