UK writer comedian Stephen Merchant, best known as sidekick to Ricky Gervais, is getting his own series in the US.
HBO has picked up Hello Ladies, co-written, directed by and starring Merchant as “a gawky Englishman searching for the woman of his dreams in Los Angeles, but the beautiful people won’t let him in.”
Merchant, best known for The Office, Extras, An Idiot Abroad, The Ricky Gervais Show and Life’s Too Short, has co-written with Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (The Office).
Merchant has previously noted he still feels like “an awkward teenager” around women.
“I thought that when you got yourself on TV there would be a door that opened and someone would say, ‘Come through to the world of showbiz where everything is easier and these amazing women can’t wait to meet you.’ But surprisingly that hasn’t happened. Just because you’ve been on BBC2 once or twice doesn’t make you Warren Beatty.”
HBO is producing in association with ABC Studios.

Seems like he will be recycling material and characters he created for his 2011 stand up tour ( of the same name ) to HBO
I know he’ll be acting, but it is a little hard to swallow when the guy is dating Rose Byrne. Must be real hard with all those millions. Ha. #endcynicalrant
Awesome. Am a big fan of Merchant and should be good without Gervais’ recycled jokes
