Rumours rise on Breakfast

All staff members on TEN's Breakfast have been summoned to a meeting this morning at 10am, according to media reports.

All staff members on TEN’s Breakfast have been summoned to a meeting this morning at 10am, according to media reports.

A crisis meeting has been called for 10am today according to the Daily Telegraph, leading to speculation the show may be facing the axe.

An email was sent to staff members at 7pm last night according to the newspaper.

The show continues to struggle in the ratings, last week averaging 36,000 viewers to Sunrise‘s 358,000 and Today‘s 321,000.

Last month TV Tonight revealed the exit of presenter Andrew Rochford and producer Majella Weimers.

TEN has maintained it is in the breakfast battle “for the long haul.”

  1. Ah the good old Sydney Daily Telegraph gets it wrong again. Just stick to printing facts and drop the constant speculation about everything and anyone.

Perhaps Channel 10 employed Paul Henry for exactly that, his type of obnoxiousness and form of sarcasm.Maybe it was an intentional move on their part,to make a controversial show, that would get people talking about what he was saying and how he was saying it.So imo calling Paul Henry obnoxious does not necessarily have to be taken as disrespectful.
Whatever the case may be,it didnt work.Time to start afresh.

  3. MediaSpy – Breaking: Ten announces Breakfast will move to 6-8:30 and The Circle will cease on 3 August making way for The Talk, Morning News, and ET.

  4. I have always said it is a good show and I like watching it, i actually turned to C7 this morning and lasted 30 secs, what the programme needs is definately Paul to be the host with the ;ady wiht him(no-one knows her name) to go,Magdelena seems to have gotten over her angst with Paul and is working well with her, she should be co-host, don;t bring back that Dr Rochford donl;t think he is a team player,People should watch and not listen to the negative publicity in social media, give it a go, you will be pleasantly surprised, hopefully it will no get axed, otherwise it is 24 in the mornings

  5. Just bring back Good Morning Australia with Kerri-Anne and someone else as host, she has a massive fan base and would be guaranteed to do better than this. Actually, and I’m being serious when I say this but I think even repeats of the old GMA would rate better than this.

  6. @bettestreep2008 With all due respect, I do find him obnoxious. Extremely so actually.

Just because Ten thought importing him from New Zealand was a good idea doesn’t make MY opinion of him invalid. I suspect, judging by the disastrous ratings, most people don’t think Ten made the right call here either.

  7. This has already been a long haul by ch10 s standards. They could move it around the schedule, may be move it to eleven at 7 each evening or if they really want to kill it schedule it around 1am…..

  8. This show will be axed before the year is over, just like 6:30 with George Negus was last year

No matter how much a network looks like it is standing behind a show, and how much PR and spin they release over how much they love it, they will axe it if it doesn’t bring in the ratings.

  9. I like watching Breakfast because it covers the main issues, and doesn’t seem to look to the competitors to find out what stories they should cover, but creates its own.

If the show does fold IMO it would be the first time in Australian TV history social media negatively affected a show to such an extent it had to fold (because people wouldn’t give it the time of day, even before the show went to air.)

I would love to know what the ratings where for Sunrise when they first began? I recall it was way behind the juggernaut that was the Today Show.

I don’t know if Australia is able to have a 3rd commercial breakfast show, however reports at the start said the number crunchers at 10 said it is possible do it and make money.

  10. I think TEN should have Henry in Mishelle’s role on Can Of Worms. He is capable of being very funny, he would definately spark up the conversation. I think people need more opportunity to get to know him, once they do I can see Breakfast being poplular with youngish males in particular.

  11. Doubt it will be axed today with lots of the crew over in London. This could just be a revamp for the show or even the addition of a weekend show.

Hugh Riminton and maybe Natasha Exelby could host it and have Hermione Kitson on news and Reuben Mourad doing the weather.

Whatever the case, I guarantee Ten will have a Breakfast show of sorts in 2013 – with or without the current team. Lots of revenue up for grabs for Ten.

  12. I think referring to Paul Henry as ‘obnoxious’ is very disrespectul.

No matter what one’s persnonal opinions of the him are – Ten management thought he was worth the multi-million $ they pay him and they most certainly wouldn’t spend this much on someone who is ‘obnoxious’.

  13. It’ll be interesting to see the outcome.
The ratings for ‘Breakfast’ have barely shifted since launch week. And, as many others have commented, it was always going to be a massively risky strategy building a new breakfast news show around Paul Henry as main host when he’s clearly very much a ‘love him or hate him’ type figure. That said, there was probably little point in doing a carbon copy of the safer, trad-style magazine style format of the two established ‘big guns’.

  14. “TEN has maintained it is in the breakfast battle “for the long haul.” ”

    – just like they were committed to the George Negus show “for the long haul”.

  15. Come on team. Breakfast is a disaster and embarrassment. This is a classic mismanagement exercise by Ten Executive’s costing the Network over $10m per annum (without the presenter salaries). A major loss for all involved.
