So what does Kevin McCloud, the host of Grand Designs, think of Grand Designs Australia?

According to local host Peter Maddison, who recently returned from spending time with McCloud in Bath in the UK, the LifeStyle gets the thumbs up.

“He was kind, very open and shared his space with me,” he tells TV Tonight.

“He, I think, is very happy that we’re doing the series over here. He respects the work we’re doing. He’s a demigod, people just love him. Everywhere you go there’s a bit of frenzy about him.

“But he took me to his favourite pub and we spent the weekend at his house with his family.

“He likes the show and we get on well. There’s no elbowing for space!

“We’re the only franchise outside of London and I jokingly say we have the same size shoe, so we don’t have to worry about filling each other’s shoes.

In fact McCloud will make an appearance at Grand Designs Live which tours Melbourne and Sydney in September.

“He’s coming to do a week in Melbourne, and I’m trying to get him to see an AFL preliminary match. He won’t know what’s going on!”

Season Three of Grand Designs is in production and goes to air about October.

  1. To be honest I find Grand Designs Australia a great disappointment. It your be renamed Rich Designs as it seems to follow the building pursuits of those with wads of cash to throw at a building. Rarely does it venture off the beaten path to explore alternative building methods as the UK series does. Frankly I find myself 90% of the time scanning through the episodes on Foxtel, looking at the building plan, and then flipping to the end reveal, and then I often dont bother as some designs are so much like others I could fall asleep. If it was not on pay TV and enabling me to scan this way I would not waste my time. I like seeing the UK series, with its real and average people giving building a go, not just the rich paying a builder to knock something up for them as the Oz series mostly shows.

  2. GD UK is on our ABC ,GD Australia is on Pay Tv .70% of potential viewers do not have Pay Tv .Why is this top show wasted on Pay Tv … ? This show is only watched by a small number of viewers on the ABC it would be seen nationally by , say 500,000 !

  3. I agree with the other comments, I do not understand how he got the hosting Gig, I find him quite forced and boring. Also he seems to where the most ugly outfits on the show(not that it matters but is sometimes distracting)

  4. I’ll never understand why/how Peter Maddison got this job. He doesn’t do the show justice on any level.

I find I his interviews as lame as his p to c’s which may be the producers fault…. anyhoo, I fast forward right through them.

I just don’t believe in the same way I believe the mighty Kev.

“of all the gin joints, in all the towns… ” they could only find him!

  5. I was surprised as well Dayman – it was a short series too – I wondered if the floods got in the way of building schedules so they’ve had to split the series.

  6. I quite like Grand Designs Australia.

I’m surprised the new season will be on so quickly after the last. I guess it’s houses that weren’t finished in time for the last season?

They need to have it set up like the UK one, where as it’s a hit, they can follow houses for several years or more.
