ABC3’s joyful teen drama Dance Academy begins production on its third series today in Sydney.

Returning are Xenia Goodwin (Tara Webster), Jordan Rodrigues (Christian Reed), Alicia Banit (Kat Karamakov), Dena Kaplin (Abigail Armstrong), Thomas Lacey (Ben Tickle), Isabel Durant (Grace Whitney), Keiynan Lonsdale (Ollie Lloyd) and Tara Morice (Miss Raine). That just leaves Tim Pocock (Ethan) out, along with Tom Green, whose character ‘Sammy’ was killed off last season.

Produced by Werner Film Productions there will be 13 episodes, down from 26 last season. This season Tara Webster (Xenia Goodwin) and her friends complete their final year at The Academy and will learn which of them will be offered a contract at The Company.

Tim Brooke-Hunt, ABC TV’s Controller of Children’s Television said: “Dance Academy goes from strength to strength on ABC3. Our launch of series 2 earlier this year saw significant audience growth both on-air and in the streaming of episodes; the series also engaged successfully with our audience on-line, via social media and on ABC3’s You Tube channel. I am delighted that a third series will result in a total of 65 episodes of Dance Academy for the enjoyment of ABC3 audiences in the future.”

Joanna Werner, producer and co-creator said: “We are so delighted to be going into production on the third series of Dance Academy. The scripts are really strong with so much going on for all of our characters, and we are working with some of the best choreographers in Australia to ensure there are even more fabulous dance routines in this series.”

Dance Academy has emerged as ABC3’s most successful local drama, having been sold to over 180 territories including  Germany, France, Italy, Spain and throughout Europe, South America, Africa and Asia. Recent sales were made with the Teen Nick network in the USA and Nickelodeon in the UK. It also has picked up awards from the Logies, Kidscreen, Australian Directors’ Guild, Hugo Television Awards and been nominated for an International Emmy. Last week it picked up an AWGIE Award.

It will screen mid-2013.
