Rumours of Rafters to end

By David Knox on August 10, 2012 / Filed Under News 14

Rumours are swirling today that Packed to the Rafters will end with its sixth season.

News Limited speculates that “rather than leave the show up in the air, it is believed the series will be a ‘celebration’, with original cast members in talks to return.”

Jessica Marais, currently a cast member of US period drama Magic City, is said to be keen to return for a handful of episodes.

Hugh Sheridan, now signed to TEN, has a contract that allows for brief appearances in the next Rafters season, but it is believed to be as few as two episodes.

This week Seven announced a renewal for Winners and Losers. Production also continues on new drama A Place to Call Home.

Insiders said a “storyline” conference will determine the show’s future.

I honestly believe Packed To The Rafters and Winners And Losers should’ve been a double act for Tuesday nights. Would be perfect together.
So if the remaining episodes of season 5 are 2013, how will season six be aired?
Have they learnt any lessons yet from the feedback of the fans/viewers about the constant starting and stopping?
I wish I could find the interview with the quote from Angus Ross when interviewed by you David Knox: “Rafters will be a full-season run, consecutively, starting very soon.”

    My understanding is 2013.

Any word on when the rest of Season 5 will be aired?

It went down hill. The likes of 2.5 men and two broke girls not to mention Winners and Losers were going to kill the Rafters anyway. Not sure about you but a couple of feel good comedies or a home grown and far more relateable to the eighties kids who were too young to remember Sex and the City kind of show will win out every time.

Yep, it’s dead and buried as far as I’m concerned. None of the newer characters hovering about Dave’s business are the slightest bit interesting, in fact they’re just as annoying as Carbo was in the early days. They’ve got bad scripts and deliver the lines equally as badly.

It jumped the shark years ago.

Have to say I agree. The show has been a dud for the last two seasons, rot started when Jessica Marais left. Storylines have been very lame, the acting worse and the show is a hot mess at the moment. Make one last season, but I wouldn’t continue it after that.

I stopped watching a few seasons ago when they took it off for Winners & Losers. The quality of the show was already getting quite bad at that time, Jessica Marais just left, and then Seven yanked it off air. Haven’t been back since. That was a bad move by Seven.

    Should have ended already.

Good to see a possible ending while it is still doing OK rather than letting the show fade to oblivion – which it will do if it keeps going.

    Yeah. Get rid of it.

I lost interest in Rafters from season 2. I do think it makes sense to finish hub. while they still can “borrow” Hugh from TEN.

I think it makes sense…the ratings and storylines haven’t been as good and also channel 7 said they will have a full drama slate next Year..so they probably want to free some space

A shame, but knew it would end soon… all good Aussie drama seems to end after 4-6 seasons here in Australia.

I say end this show too. The magic is gone and so there’s no point trying to milk blood from a stone…

I’ve lost interest with the Rafter the moment they started screwing them over for W&L, surely they can have W&L on another night and leave PTTR on Tuesday nights? Maybe they could use W&L to replace a reality show?
