TEN’s Assange telemovie to premiere at Toronto Film Fest

TEN's upcoming Julian Assange telemovie gets top honours with selection at the Toronto International Film Festival.

TEN’s Julian Assange telemovie Underground will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

The telemovie centres on a teenage Assange and his gang of close friends in Melbourne as they wage a battle from their bedrooms, trying to break into the computer systems of the world’s most powerful organisations.

The role of Assange is played by newcomer Alex Williams with a cast including Rachel Griffiths, Anthony LaPaglia, and rising star Callan McAuliffe.

It is written and directed by Robert Connolly (Balibo), based on a book of the same name written by Suelette Dreyfus, and produced by Helen Bowden (The Slap) for Matchbox Pictures.

The film festival debut follows The Slap and Jack Irish having local festival debuts, but only a handful of films produced for TV have ever been programmed at the Toronto International Film Festival.

TEN Drama Exec Rick Maier, said: “Very rarely do you get the jump on the international market. This is not only great recognition for the film itself, and the bold leap of faith, but for the Australian television industry full stop. TEN is immensely proud of this acknowledgement.”

Underground will debut later this year on TEN. Looking forward to this one.

  1. Wow, is this a first for an Australian Telemovie David?
When will it go to air here and could this be yet another big hit for the drama department at Ten?
