Danish drama is a great ‘arthouse’ alternative

Sick of Reality TV? The Bridge on SBS TWO offers a fascinating alternative for the discerning viewer.

On Wednesday night SBS TWO begins a new drama from Denmark, The Bridge.

SBS has previously screened other Danish dramas such The Killing, The Protectors and Anna Pihl.

The premise for this one is quite fascinating.

A dead body is found on the Øresund Bridge that joins Denmark with Sweden. Half of the body is one country, and the other half in another, so both police forces are summoned to the scene. I won’t spoil the rest for you (although the synopsis already has, elsewhere)…

Being on SBS TWO this has subtitles, but I felt like I was watching an arthouse movie, with the tone, the cinematography and characterisation all a fresh alternative to US dramas. Such choices are kinda rare on Free to Air TV.

So if you’re tired of Reality everywhere and you want something that makes you think, check this one out.

8:30pm Wednesday on SBS TWO.

  1. @Secret Squirrel… I really loved the US version of The Killing, and when S2 ended, I along with many others , was hoping that another Season would be on offer.. but sadly the AMC pulled the plug…

Then… a month or two later. potential suitors with experience bringing axed TV series back to life i.e. Netflix and DirecTV began early talks with Fox TV Studios to pick up a 3rd season of the show…. (It’s a bit like my fave TV show Damages… someone came to the rescue, yay 🙂 )

Fingers crossed, I am hoping we get to see a S3.

Thanks for this article David… if i had not read about this on my fave website I would have had no idea that this series existed…

@Dr_Rudi.. I remember a very cold and wet weekend In June 2010, and as a result, spent a lot of time watching S1/S2 of Wallander, and loved it.

In July 2012, I again spent another winters days, watching Season 3. A really great show.

  2. I know that I’m way in the minority but I thoroughly enjoyed both series of The Killing and am looking fwd to this. Thanks for the reminder, David!
