Derryn Hinch signs with Seven Network

Exclusive: Derryn Hinch has signed to join the Seven Network for Seven News, Sunrise & Sunday Night.

EXCLUSIVE: Derryn Hinch has signed with the Seven Network.

The broadcaster will appear with Seven News, Sunrise and Sunday Night.

As previously reported, Hinch recently met with Seven execs in Sydney to discuss opportunities. He was recently told his 3AW programme would not be renewed, despite good ratings in his drivetime show.

Hinch will join the Sunday Night reporting team as well as regular appearances for Seven News and Sunrise. But the deal does not include fronting his own half-hour current affair show. Hinch ran on Seven from 1988–1992 before moving to TEN.

Hinch, who ends with 3AW later this year, is set to confirm the news on his drive programme this afternoon.

UPDATE (Press Release):
Hinch will take up a role as National Public Affairs Commentator working across Sunday Night, Seven News and Sunrise.

After successfully recovering from a life-saving liver transplant last year, Hinch says he is looking forward to returning “home” to Seven.

“My doctor says I’ve got a Rolls-Royce liver – and now I’m back at the Rolls-Royce network. I can’t wait to get started,” Hinch said.

“I’ve got a lot of energy, and a lot of ideas and stories I want to pursue. The fat lady hasn’t sung yet. In fact she won’t be needed on stage for a long time.”

An opinionated and often provocative journalist, Hinch has worked as a radio host, TV presenter, foreign correspondent, newspaper editor and author in a celebrated media career spanning more than 50 years.

Between 1988 and 1992 he also fronted what was then the leading public affairs program in the country, ‘Hinch’, on Channel Seven.

He currently hosts the top-rating drive show for Melbourne’s 3AW radio station, a post that will end in November.

Seven’s Head of News and Public Affairs, Peter Meakin, said: “I have always admired Derryn’s passion and commitment. He is an unapologetic crusader – often controversial, but never boring. We are delighted to welcome him back to Seven and look forward to him making waves.”

Hinch will start work with Seven immediately, appearing on Sunrise on Monday morning.

  1. @ Kenny, watch, wait and see.. Nine has it in the bag!! Hinch will change the Melb news figures, i don’t think so.
Last night (Friday) in Melb – 7 news 276 thousand.
9 news Melb – 390 thousand, they won the week by 562 thousand. That is huge!!

  2. @DanR – “Good fit for their large 55+ audience”. Er, last week’s ratings for example – Seven won 18-49 and 25-54. May have a “large 55+ audience” but also the largest 18-54 audience!

  3. Although i like Derryn, i don’t think his going 2 fix the problem’s 7 News Melb is going through.
Good luck 2 him and great 2 see he will be on the airways again soon.
As a 9 News watcher and always have been i wont get 2 see him.
9 News is The One for our family and seem’s many other’s, the figures 9 News in Melb are getting are just amazing!!
Through TvTonight i have been able 2 see that 7 News Melb has not won a week for the year.
    Thanks TvTonight!!

  4. Seven adding Hinch to “the roast chook”. He will do sensationally well and I know I will be watching out for him.
