After being staged in Melbourne earlier this year the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular is headed for the Sydney Opera House.

The Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra will perform Murray Gold’s score in December. Tickets start at $60 and go on sale on 21 September, with a special fan presale from Wednesday 19 September for members of the official Doctor Facebook page.

As part of the much anticipated Summer at the House season, the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall will play host to the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular. As the seventh series of the world’s longest-running sci-fi TV show screens in Australia, fans will be given the opportunity to encounter the series’ most fearsome monsters against the backdrop of Murray Gold’s score played live by 80 musicians of the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, accompanied by a 60-strong choir.

Anticipating the show’s 50th anniversary in 2013 and inspired by the BBC Doctor Who Proms at London’s Royal Albert Hall, the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular will see the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra joined by a host of live monsters such as Daleks, Cybermen, Judoon, Clockwork Robots, Scarecrows and the Doctor’s recent opponents, the Silence. Conducted by Ben Foster, the Orchestra will present Murray Gold’s thrilling music from the previous television series. The live music will be accompanied by a big screen presentation of key moments from the TV programme and specially edited sequences showcasing Matt Smith’s performance as the Eleventh Doctor.

Since its premiere on British TV screens in 1963, Doctor Who has gone on to become one of the most successful TV series of all time. The newest series premiered on ABC iView this month immediately after its premiere in the UK and received the highest ever daily plays of a program on iview, with 75,900 plays in 24 hours and 186,000 views before its ABC1 transmission. The series continues both on ABC iView and at 7.30pm on Saturdays on ABC1.

The Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular returns to Australia this summer following its two sold-out performances at Melbourne’s Plenary Hall in February 2012, and will give Australian fans another opportunity to combine the most exciting moments of two series with a live music experience.

Helen Pendlebury, Head of Commercial – Entertainment & Children’s Brands, BBC Worldwide Australasia said, ‘BBC Worldwide Australasia is so pleased to further our partnership with Sydney Opera House Presents by bringing the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular to Sydney for a summer season, as we continue to build our calendar of BBC events in Australia. Our events offer fans a unique opportunity to experience their favourite programmes in a new and immersive way and this is the perfect lead into Doctor Who’s 50th Anniversary year in 2013.’
