New appointments as ABC News begins restructure

ABC News has restructured its senior management ranks as it prepares to roll out a new newsgathering structure.

ABC News has restructured its senior management ranks as it prepares to roll out a new newsgathering structure across the Division.

Craig McMurtrie will return to Australia from the ABC’s Washington Bureau to become Head Newsgathering, responsibile for coordinating ABC news coverage of all major national and international stories.

Gaven Morris, currently the Head of Continuous News, will move to the newly created role of Head News Content, responsible for the quality and focus of ABC news programs and news content on radio, television and digital platforms.

Don Lange, who has been Head of News Programming, will become Deputy Head Newsgathering / News Editor NSW, responsible for working with the Head Newsgathering on key elements of network coverage and the NSW news operation.

The three new positions come ahead of a move to a common, story-based newsgathering structure that provides immediate news coverage on continuous platforms like ABC News 24, News Online and News Radio, as well as bulletins on radio and television.

“The current media environment creates challenges and opportunities for all media organisations and the ABC has been reviewing its newsgathering structures to meet them,” said ABC Director of News, Kate Torney.

“Increasingly, news audiences want news delivered immediately and are accessing ABC news content across an ever-growing range of platforms and programs,” said Torney. “Our systems and structures need to evolve to take better account of that.

“I look forward to working closely with Craig, Don and Gaven as we develop new ways of delivering original, quality journalism to all Australians when and where they want it,” said Torney.
