Rumour mill: Hinch back on Seven?

Could "the human headline" be headed back to the networks where he had his first current affairs show?

There are rumours emerging that Derryn Hinch may be returning to Seven, after he was spotted lunching with execs in Sydney on Friday.

Together with talk of changes surrounding Today Tonight, including that it may make way for a one hour news bulletin, could the human headline be returning to the network where he made famous those “Shame, shame shame” words? The very same ones that Steve Vizard uttered every week on Fast Forward?

After 5 years with Seven he later had his own show on TEN for 3 years.

Hinch was recently sacked by 3AW but is due to fulfil his contract from next Monday when he finishes a current holiday.

Maybe he was just having a friendly drink with colleagues.

A Seven insider told TV Tonight they were surprised by the latest speculation.

That’s life…

  1. @oztvheritage, To say Hinch was the start of what we have today is trying to rewrite history. It was widely recognised at the time that the Hinch show was different. If he was the start of the rot he would not of got the axe. Derryn would never do trash TV. He is a man of principle.

  2. Don’t get me wrong. Current affairs these days in absolute crap. Hunch was the start of what we have today. He had to be to compete with Jana and Mike on ACA. Now Jana is who I would love to see back on tv. She was an amazing talent!!!!

  3. I love how people are saying here that it would be good to have him back because he is a better “investigative journalist” than the current mob we have… isn’t everyone forgetting that it is Hinch whom the current mob learned from? IMO he was the start of the rot.

But I reckon a better fit for Hinch would be on Ten anyway… specifically The Project… on the same night that Steve Price is on… those two are besties, right? >:)

  4. @OzJay…fair comment..and yes, ‘we’ can tend to forget how someone was way-back-when. That came to mind after I posted. However, I think age and time have evolved Derryn somewhat and although I may not have him as key on-screen anchor for every episode of a proposed show..he would certainly bring something interesting to a panel or similar scenario. And for him I think wellness and work sort of go together these days.

  5. Yikes. It says a lot about the current state of TV current affairs that so many would apparently welcome Hinch back. Hinch’s TV efforts were the Today Tonight/Current Affair of his day – lowest-common-denominator tabloid junk journalism. But now he’s an elder statesman?!

  6. Is it so wrong for someone with loads of experience to appear on tv just because he is getting on a little. It’s about time we started to value people with age. Derryn looks grat for his age. He would also make a great replacement for Neil Mitchell on sunrise.

  7. Yes please!!
@oztvheritage – Have you seen CBS 60Minutes lately? Give me an older more knowledgeable reporter over the blonde bimbos that seem to be everywhere these days.
Actually he’s about the same age as Peter Harvey.

  8. It would be good to get such a legend back on tv but only if it is a serious current affairs show and not the shit we have now which is blatant plugging blatant advertising and blatant attacking of rival networks shows but if they did make it a serious current affairs show it would probably flop because for some sad reason the Australian public seems to like the shit that current affairs shows are today the failure of George negus proved that

  9. Whilst he’d probably do better than that shite from Today Tonight (can you imagine him introducing the next fad diet or new wonder bra?) I can’t help but feel he’s had his time.

They should be looking for new talent and innovate – not looking back.

  10. Snap @swosha… Nice to see the comments and perhaps now that we’ve done without proper investigative stories for such a long while we are learning to re-appreciate people like Derryn.

  11. Perhaps if he returned we could get some actual current affairs rather than the same dross churned out by 7 and 9 every night. That’s why I watch The Project, at least you get something newsworthy and of relevance. Could be good to see some real news from a newshound
