The Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control

Doctor Who fans can celebrate the series return and indulge in a new play toy, a Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control.

Doctor Who fans can celebrate the series return and indulge in a new play toy, a Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control on sale through BBC Worldwide.

The remote, with a recommended retail price of $105.00 is manufactured by The Wand Company and available from mightyape.com.au.

Ever since Patrick Troughton, the Second Doctor, first produced it from his jacket, the sonic screwdriver has been the Doctor’s most trusted tool. Now, for the first time, Australian Doctor Who fans will have the opportunity to bring the Time Lord’s extremely cool and iconic gadget into their own homes.

A high quality metal replica of the Mark VII Sonic Screwdriver currently used by the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith, the new Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control is a gesture-based universal remote control that utilises infrared (IR) technology to manipulate almost all earth-based home entertainment systems – from TVs and iPod docks to DVD/Blu-ray players and beyond.

With a green flashing tip and an impressive four operational modes – including a practice mode – and three memory banks, a total of 39 commands can be stored in the Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control, giving aspiring Time Lord’s the option of operating multiple home entertainment devices with different flicks of the wrist.

Control is straightforward – even for humans. The Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control works through a series of 13 short gestures, such as rotating, flicking or tapping, and a guided set-up procedure uses spoken prompts to match gestures to commands learned from existing remote controls.

And, for those fans who wish to transport a little more of The Doctor into their own homes, the FX operational mode features a range of authentic vintage Doctor Who sound effects.

All unauthorised alien usage of his device can be avoided as the Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control comes with an inbuilt security setting – a three digit PIN can be set by the primary user – offering ultimate human control of the ultimate alien device.

As time travel is not readily available to most humans, Doctor Who fans will have to wait until August 31, 2012 to own a Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control, when it is available from Australian retailers. The RRP is from $105.00.

Australian fans can order their Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control from MightyApe.com.au.

The seventh series of Doctor Who can be seen on ABC1 from Saturday September 8 at 7.30pm, starting with the highly anticipated Asylum of the Daleks. ABC will also be making episodes available on iview six days before they air on ABC1, just after the UK transmission.

  1. I don’t normally read the PayTV section – I’m surprised you filed it here related to BBC Worldwide when the latest series is about to start on Free To Air (or already on iView – thanks for the heads up).
Like most people I guess, I think the remote looks cool but too pricey.

  2. Apparently it’s great, as long as you don’t try to use it as an actual remote control…

  3. Ha, I get an error message from that link. I think we killed the site.

I’m tempted to get this, but I think I have way too much cool but useless junk lying around.

  4. Next greatest invention.
Then I may not have six remote controls. The PVR may not turn on the DVD etc. or a so-called “universal” with 126 buttons that still doesn’t work.

  5. The idea of a gesture-based remote is intriguing – but, as a word of warning, the various reviews around the place boil down to “if you’re a huge Who fan you’ll buy it anyway; just don’t bother trying to use it as a remote.”
