Airdate: Melbourne Zoo: 150 Years

Nine News celebrates the 150th anniversary of Melbourne Zoo, including an appearance by Sir David Attenborough.

Nine screens a special in Melbourne this Friday night which celebrates the 150th anniversary of Melbourne Zoo in Parkville, presented by the Nine News team.

Worth noting is an appearance by Sir David Attenborough.

On the eve of its 150th birthday, Peter Hitchener, Livinia Nixon, Tony Jones, Alicia Loxley and Jo Hall take Nine News on an all-encompassing look at the Melbourne Zoo, one of the city’s most treasured institutions.

The celebrations begin with Melbourne Zoo: 150 Years, this Friday, October 5, at 7.30pm on Channel Nine. Jo Hall takes a trip down memory lane with the city’s favourite gorilla, Mzuri. We look back on the triumph of a landmark breeding program that produced Mzuri, the first animal born from IVF – a moment that captured the attention of the world.

Spend a fascinating day inside the life of the zoo as Tony Jones unmasks the ins and outs of the tireless machine that keeps it going. From what the lions eat for breakfast to how many stops the vets have to make per day, viewers get a rare glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes.

Alicia Loxley checks out the amazing research programs that keep Melbourne Zoo at the forefront of conservation, while Livinia Nixon explores the new meerkat exhibition.

We delve into the past to look at historical photographs never seen before that show how the zoo has evolved from humble beginnings to the incredible sanctuary it is today.

Plus, the world’s most famous wildlife expert, Sir David Attenborough, visits the zoo to chat to the staff about his passion and how they are bringing the wonders of the animal world to the people of Victoria.
