Media Watch looks at Alan Jones, sort of…

Media Watch will look at aspects of the Alan Jones saga, but not what he said, nor the advertising backlash.

Tonight’s episode of Media Watch will look at aspects of the Alan Jones saga.

But it won’t be about what Jones said, the advertiser backlash nor the suspension of all ads on his breakfast show.

Jones’ remarks about Julia Gillard weren’t made on a radio broadcast (and therefore beyond both Media Watch and ACMA charters), but Jonathan Holmes will be looking at the ethics behind the Sunday Tele’s original story about the speech at the Young Libs dinner.

Meanwhile last Thursday on SKY Business channel’s MediaWeek, ACMA Chairman Chris Chapman also declined to comment on the incident, saying while held had a personal view on the matter ACMA’s focus is with licensees not talent.

While sponsors ditch Alan Jones in droves, Sunrise still hasn’t acted on sacking him as a regular contributor. No doubt Kerry Stokes’ support call to Jones’ show last Monday has a lot to do with that…

Media Watch airs at 9:20pm tonight on ABC1.

  1. @steveany 2.0 – that was a private statement made under the Chatham House Rule and you have no right to record and/or publish and/or comment publicly on it, you cyberbully. I just hope that Twitbook doesn’t get ahold of it.

If we are indeed literary brothers can I be Faramir?

  2. @Secret Squirrel –
“You’re my first in the morning Mr Knox”, indeed!
What an unprecedented display of obsequiousness! I thought we were literary brothers, how dare you attempt to curry Mr Knox’s favour at my expense? 😉
I’m disappointed in you, you’re a very Naughty Squirrel. 🙁

  3. “Because he’s an insufferable, egotistical bore,…”
C’mon Kenny, David isn’t that bad!

(You’re my first in the morning, Mr Knox).

  4. @steveany 2.0 – agree 100%. Although you are my third stop David, sorry about that.

Is Media Watch’s story tonight because of the complaints raised by Fairfax throughout the week? In the Sunday Tele yesterday they had a few articles about this and the Editorial absolutely blasted Fairfax, accusing them of plagiarism and sour grapes.

IMO it will be a shame if the infighting between News and Fairfax detracts from Jones’ ugly episode.

  5. Y’know David, it’s interesting to see that there have been a few more comments like @jjmsau’s in the last year or so, (he’s wrong IMHO) but I think it’s because your blog is so well written, researched and presented that it now has more of the appearance of a mainstream media outlet than a personal blog. I check a set sequence of websites each day, and yours is my second stop after the ABC newspage.
So don’t be irked by those sort of comments, it’s actually a tribute to your professionalism.
    Just sayin’….

  6. @jjmsau – Because he’s an insufferable, egotistical bore, and anyone interested in his one-sided views on everything are already listening to him on the radio, at their retirement homes.
Kerry Stokes’ call (or did 2GB call Kerry Stokes) was odd. From it one gained the impression that Stokes supported Jones’ comments. He did say “I support you all the way Alan”.

    1. Because he made reprehensible comments and Seven pitches itself as a family network. It’s a personal blog, I’ve editorialised for 5.5 years and no sign of changing. That’s what personal blogs are about?
