Seven’s coverage of the Spring Racing Carnival gets underway on Saturday with Bruce McAvaney, Simon Marshall, Luca Cumani and Richard Freedman leading the commentary team.

Once again, on that first Tuesday in November, the nation will stop while Channel 7 is in full gallop as we broadcast the 152nd running of the Melbourne Cup – along with all of the fanfare surrounding this iconic four-day carnival at Flemington.

It’s an event that goes from strength to strength both locally and internationally. In the last 10 years Australians have witnessed the overwhelming emotion of Damien Oliver’s win on Media Puzzle, the unrivalled three-peat by Makybe Diva, a Japanese quinella and, of course, the drama of 12 months ago when Dunaden and Red Cadeux hit the line at almost the exact same moment.

For Channel 7, the four-day telecast rivals the magnitude of the AFL Grand Final, Bathurst 1000 and the Australian Open Tennis. More than 300 personnel will be engaged across the 30 hour telecast utilising some 50 plus cameras. Those cameras are positioned to capture every single moment of the Cup Carnival – around the course, in tracking vehicles, in the jockeys’ and stewards’ rooms, in the parade and betting rings, in the barriers, on the ground and in helicopters above.

In between races, those cameras will focus on all the fun of the fair, around the Birdcage, at Fashions on the Field, in the Member’s pavilion, in the general public areas and the car parks.

And in line with the growing international flavour of the Carnival, Francesca Cumani, the acclaimed international rider and daughter of prominent English trainer Luca Cumani, joins our hosting panel led by the incomparable sports master caster Bruce McAvaney and co-hosts Simon Marshall and Richard Freedman. They are just four of the 16 public faces of Seven’s stable of stars backed up by the largest production crew assembled in the country this year.

From the first race on Derby Day to the last race on Stakes Day more than a week later, Seven will be all around the track as the whole nation stops to watch the drama unfold.

  1. Much prefer 7’s coverage of the racing than 9, but both of the channels spend too much time interviewing stars promoting their upcoming programs. Anyway, hope I pick the winner of the Cup! Americain maybe.

  2. Yep Craig they will watch it in HD as I watched the Bathurst 1000 replay on Speed HD in excellent HD as also the Tennis Open we just put up with what Ch7 dishes up!

  3. Again why can’t Seven have the coverage of at least the Tuesday races simulcast on 7MATE?

    It’s 2012 and we still can’t see the ‘race that stops a nation’ in HD?

    Any bets international viewers will see it in HD?
