Nine wants apology for Mad Monday abuse

Nine News boss Darren Wick is seeking an apology from Bulldogs players following reporter Jayne Azzopardi copping abuse whilst covering a “Mad Monday” report.

News Limited reports the abuse aimed at Azzopardi included:

“There are some ladies here to stick their heads in your pants”;

“S… me off you dumb dog”; “I want to go and punch you in the face.

Bulldogs’ major sponsor Gary Johnston from Jaycar Electronics when he told Ben Fordham on Radio 2GB: “If a woman walks into some bars in Sydney, she will be ogled, she will be treated as an object, and that’s the way it is. She doesn’t have to walk into those bars.”

While Canterbury boss Todd Greenberg (pictured) would not confirm if he had identified the culprits in his investigation, Darren Wick last night said the club should have no problem identifying who yelled the disgusting abuse.

“It’s not that hard to work out,” Wick said. “I just had a look at the tape. I would imagine they could work it out pretty quickly, the insiders in the club.”

Azzopardi has already received an apology from Canterbury chairman Ray Dibb and Greenberg but Wick said they hoped the individuals would now own up.

  1. While what the players apparently did was deplorable, what was channel 9 thinking sending a female reporter to an end of season booze-best? Surely that’s tempting fate. Where’s 9’s duty of care to its employees?

  2. Remember everyone if you pay a S@it load of money for the tv rights to the NRL you can do what you please,( remember Mr Gyngell) it’s 9 trying to recoup some of its money and trying to make news. Paul Henry for 9 News anyone?

  3. @msd: Me too. I was a electronics tech & hobbyist for many years, spent lots of time & money in Jaycar, gave it up for a while, but have been thinking about getting back into it again. On-line is the way for most things, but where to go now for the one-off handful of capacitors you inevitably need on a Sunday afternoon?

I’d be the first to admit that I’m not a paragon of PC-ness, and the attitude of the players involved is no great surprise, but Gary Johnston’s remarks are disgusting.

  4. @steveany 2.0, I should also have added … though I’m enormously heartened by the overwhelming number of men who are switched on, plugged in and respectful of women, of which I know many!

  5. Of course the media are going to be there. How dumb are these players. Its the day after they lost a GF. The other 3 teams in both codes managed to get through there day without abusing anyone.

What a great response from Garry Johnston. Really Garry if a man spoke like that to your daughter or wife would you turn around and say to her well you should expect to be ogled. Moron.

  6. @MJL That is so true and I wonder what happen if I bring my camera crew to nine christmas party with my reporter started taking video and say i’m from channel 7. What would happen? They will kick me out. It because the bulldogs want some privacy and channel 9 (the station that has the right to game) never gave them privacy.

  7. As a supplement to my last post,no I am not some kind of hick redneck what The Bulldogs do is almost always disgusting and that type of behavior no matter what they do is never acceptable….Let us just put all the facts into perspective other wise we will all appear as manipulative as a politicians and God help us if we ever sink to the depths of the current mob who are playing the media minions like a harmonica.
“Let’s just go and record some egotistical bigmouth saying something linking someone to say a Prime Ministers dead father”
“Yeah righto we have proven the average punter is too concerned about political correctness to care about how I have been lying my Ar@e of for the last 5 years….that will work”

  8. Let’s just all get over the BS,Facts are
1- Women like to get dressed up and look nice if Men did not look at them the natural order of the universe would be reversed and we would cease to exist.
2- Gyngell announced to the world after the Rights fiasco that Nine now owns the Game
“I sit here unapologetically … when you pay this sort of money to have the games, you actually have to put the programming into slots you can commercialise.”
This will be sorted out internally.
    3-Political Correctness:
The belief, conceived by a vast minority and sold to the majority by the media, that it’s possible to pick up a piece of sh*t by the clean end.

  9. When will channel 9 apologise for trying to gatecrash a private function that they were asked politely to not attend?

They instead sent their crime reporter and a helicopter to spy.

  10. God, it’s so pathetic and juvenile! Honestly, sometimes I’m ashamed to be a guy.
Those types of ‘men’ should actually be re-categorised as a lower order of animal. But I hope our female readers (thinking of you Trix) realise that most men are not like that these days and not to be too depressed about it……

  11. And NRL wonders why it still has a reputation for being misogynistic and accepting of revolting male attitudes. The sponsor’s reaction, though, was even worse. Subtext: men are not responsible for their behaviour, women are. Pretty depressing.
