Veteran Nine News man Peter Harvey has been diagnosed with cancer.

Showbiz reporter Peter Ford told 3AW Harvey had been told by doctors he had spots on his pancreas, after feeling unwell.

Doctors today will determine a course of treatment for the Walkley Award-winning reporter, but they are confident they have detected the cancer early and will be able to manage it.

Harvey has continued to work within Nine News and 60 Minutes, despite being in his late ’60s. Earlier this year he was hospitalised after being wounded during a dog brawl in Centennial Park, Sydney.

Nine’s head of news and current affairs, Darren Wick, told the Sydney Morning Herald the thoughts of everyone at the Nine Network “are with Harves and his family through this difficult time”.

“We all love him. He’s a great colleague, a mentor to so many young reporters and producers, a wonderful storyteller and a terrific person to have around the place,” he said.

“We expect to see him back, wandering the floors of Channel Nine very soon.”

He has been with Nine since 1975.
