Shameless to end in 2013

Offbeat UK drama Shameless is to end next year, after 11 series of the dysfunctional Gallagher clan.

Chortle reports Creator Paul Abbott said he wanted to bring the show to an end on the 10th anniversary of its first airing.

“Its 10th anniversary seems a fitting time to shut the book on Shameless. We’ve had an absolute ball making this stuff up for a living. We’ve given back in spades and got away with absolute murder, on behalf of such a fantastically outspoken audience.

“But this is also the year my dad died and he was, in abstract, my core inspiration for starting the whole Shameless party rolling, I wanted to make invisible people vivid. Closing the two eras in the same year feels very right. Now I’m off to build the next whatever it is.”

The series has been a long-running success for SBS, and a US spin-off was also spawned, but numbers in Australia have dwindled in the last two years.

The final series of 14 episodes is currently being filmed in Manchester.

  1. A shame, but all good things must come to an end.

I always found the disappearance of at least one Gallagher per series to be a bit unrealistic though. Wouldn’t the elder siblings visit the family every now and then? At the very least to make sure that the younger ones were coping with Frank.
In the most recent series on SBS Frank only had one child left, and the others only got an occasional mention. I realise that actors move on, but you’d think that some would make a guest appearance every now and then.

  2. And Shameless it was! I watched with shock and laughter until about season 6 and then the laughs dwindled into a bit of cringe. Frank was always Frank which kept this all together. In the long run the constant changes in the great cast were hard on the show. Thankyou for this eye opening series on the tough living in the lives of so many living in the estates of the U.K.
