Who will judge Australia’s Got Talent?

Dannii maybe. Kyle no. Brian no. Expect Seven to refresh its judging panel for AGT next year.

Dannii Minogue is probably resting a little easier today.

If industry chatter is anything to go by, she will be the last judge standing on a return season for Australia’s Got Talent.

Kyle Sandilands and Brian McFadden are almost certain to be shown the exit door as the show seeks to refresh against the might of The Voice.

AGT underperformed this year against Nine’s new juggernaut despite its stellar year in 2011. Next year Seven will surely schedule the show away from Nine’s talent show, but it won’t want to shuffle too close to The X Factor either. By this stage last year Seven had already announced auditions, suggesting that the season could be later next year. At least there are no Olympics in the way.

But the show will also need to hit the refresh button with it staging, judging panel and maybe even its hosting. Dannii Minogue is widely seen as the show’s strongest asset, while Kyle Sandilands has created headaches for Seven. With Nine’s star power guests on The Voice the guessing game will be on as to potential candidates.

Meanwhile Seven has also announced a return for Dancing with the Stars, amid rumours it could consider a season of former champions.

Then there is the Dutch reality format Celebrity Splash, recently picked up by ABC (US). Expect this one to go during the warmer seasons. What a shame that old Man O Man pool at Media City isn’t deep enough.

A return for The Mole is already attracting promising feedback.

Period drama A Place to Call Home, originally promised for 2012 will finally arrive next year with an impressive cast.

House Rules trades off the success of My Kitchen Rules as a well-produced in-house format as long as it doesn’t make the mistakes of The Renovators.

But what of cuts to News and Current Affairs? So far there’s nothing concrete, but don’t rule it out for later. Seven’s release also didn’t mention a return for Deal or No Deal despite Seven sources having previously confirmed to TV Tonight it would resume production. A shift to 5pm would make some sense if there is a new format to step into 5:30pm.

  1. I’d start it in February for starters, and defo needs the live shows cutting down – the “Grand Final” alone went on for a month. As Guy says the UK do all live shows within a week and that works really well, making the live shows a real event and also making it easier to get decent judges by making it a one week commitment rather than 10 for the live shows.

    1. Mr J: Given this some thought and tried to remember what we knew last September…. Yes Wild Boys was promised for 2012, but there was never any renewal for a second season (hence there is no “Renewed: Wild Boys” story on the site). It was never apparent last September how many episodes had been made of WB, so there was the possibility that S1 could have continued into 2013, had there been 22 eps. As we later discovered there wasn’t. So while they did backflip on the show being part of 2012 there was never any S2 ever announced. It’s clear that it was a move designed to prop up the series while it was still new and on air.

  2. Seven need to look at what the UK did this year with a week long semi-finals Live and then a Grand Final at the end of it all. I know thats a lot to ask but it can be done.

The Mole i am really looking forward to but David please tell me The Amazing Race is coming back. I would hate to lose that for this show.

  3. This time last year wild boys had just been renewed for a second season despite the predictions, Then they backflipped. I predict the same happen here. I think dannii should move to the x factor and AGT axed. Or atleast rested for a year.

  4. maybe they should have a brand new panel of 3/4 and make dannii the host (get rid of grant). surely she’d be up for it, she’s done a heap of presenting in the uk.

  5. Brian and Kyle were good in the first 2 years but last year both looked a bit bored with it all. Keep Dannii, get another Australian and maybe a big overseas star. I nominate Sharon Osbourne. They probably won’t do it but Grant needs a rest too. I can also see Julia Morris hosting or judging this show.
