ABC News 24: Future Forum

Virginia Haussegger hosts a panel on the question "Can Universities meet the challenges facing Regional Australia?"

ABC News 24 has another Future Forum next month asking: “Can Universities Meet the Challenges Facing Regional Australia?”

In an increasingly globalised and urbanised world, the future of Regional Australia is being shaped by the challenges of industrial, technological, environmental and population change.

Now more than ever, education is the key to future prosperity for individuals as well as the nation. Yet the Gonski report highlighted the entrenched inequality within our education system, with some estimating a 30 per cent gap in education outcomes between regional and metropolitan students.

So what can universities do to close this gap? And how do we ensure that they are meeting the needs of regional Australia by producing skilled, job-ready graduates?

And ultimately, what role do universities have to play in regional development and sustainability?

To debate these issues during a one hour televised forum, host ABC journalist Virginia Haussegger will be joined by the six Vice-Chancellors of the Regional Universities Network including:

Prof David Battersby – Vice-Chancellor and President, University of Ballarat (and Chair of RUN)
Professor Peter Lee – Vice-Chancellor and President, Southern Cross University
Professor Jim Barber – Vice-Chancellor and CEO, University of New England
Professor Scott Bowman – Vice-Chancellor and President, CQ University
Professor Greg Hill – Vice-Chancellor and President, University of the Sunshine Coast
Professor Jan Thomas – Vice-Chancellor and President, University of Southern Queensland

This program is a partnership between ABC News 24 and the Regional Universities Network (RUN).

Sunday, 9 December at 8.30pm on ABC NEWS 24.
