Age Discrimination Commissioner Susan Ryan says Nine’s Big Brother should have embraced more older Australians amongst its cast.
Speaking to The Playlist on Showcase, she agreed with host Andrew Mercado that ads touting older Australians weren’t reflected in the mix, with the eldest being 32.
“Often as people get older they free themselves up and they say things on television or anywhere that they wouldn’t otherwise say. So you get a lot more interesting range of human nature and isn’t that what people watch Television for?” she said.
“Isn’t it called a Reality show? We’ll walk out of the studio today and we’ll see people of all races. You go into town, into any office ……so that’s Reality. So why are they creating something that’s not Reality?”
Nine has claimed BB‘s social media results as one of the show’s success stories, with big numbers in tweets, and online catch-up streams.
Nine is tipped to announce a renewal for Big Brother next week.

@Leppie – I don’t think one gay guy out of a bunch of very white young people makes that group diverse. Anyway, Ryan’s comments were about age and ethnicity/culture, not sexual orientation.
You can kid yourself that Nine didn’t purposely select people who looked like they’d come straight from The Block, and that only those people applied, but other reality programs seem to manage to find a more diverse range of participants.
Gay guy winning and proposing (producers were aware of his plans).. that’s pretty diverse.
I don’t agree. I don’t think Nine intentionally look for white and young people. I think it’s whoever is most interesting and most entertaining gets in the house.
It would be interesting to have a multi-cultural house and see who gets booted first.
And in other news… Water is wet!
Old people on Big Brother = Yuck!
Is it possible that any grown-up would actually not go on Big Brother. NB – Being a grown-up isn’t about chronology.
and interesting that the ‘oldest’ Won.. Channel Nine should be taking note……watching younguns ‘hooking up’ gets very boring quickly…even my teenagers would go “ughh yuk” when the endless kissing and canoodling was shown…..
if too many old people in the cast, that would be “Big Grandfather” then…
