Axed: Breakfast, TEN Morning News.

TEN Morning News and Breakfast to end on November 30.

Breaking News: TEN has axed both Breakfast and TEN Morning News, to end on November 30th.

A Network TEN spokesperson told TV Tonight, “TEN Morning News and Breakfast staff were told this morning that it is planned to stop production of both programs on November 30.

“The Breakfast program has not resonated with viewers. But breakfast television still represents an opportunity for TEN and we will return to the breakfast TV market at some point next year.”

The news follows dire ratings, at best averaging 50,000, and a commitment that the network was in “for the long haul.” It also belies confirmation at TEN’s 2013 programming launch last month that the show would return.

Since Breakfast launched in February much has been made of Paul Henry’s million dollar contract contrasting with the low numbers, while the network continues to cut costs elsewhere.

Last week TEN News staff were given their marching orders after the network reportedly failed to receive enough voluntary redundancies. The most profile of these so far has been Melbourne news presenter Helen Kapalos.

Breakfast had also lost Andrew Rochford earlier in the year and seen the resignation of its producer Majella Wiemers.

The news first broke on Twitter via Peter Ford, but was also tipped by an insider “francismckonkey” here on Saturday.

Paul Henry and Kathryn Robinson are confirmed to leave TEN but Magdalena Roze will remain.

  1. I have to say that I am disappointed. TEN Breakfast provided a point of difference for me (yes, it’s all about me) and I know many of my friends, family and colleagues also liked it. It was the only breakfast program I have made an effort to watch since I don’t know when. I have found that the others (Sunrise and Today) are more about the entertainment. So long TEN Breakfast, you will be missed 🙁

  2. Actually – before I am rightly hammered for the last part of my earlier comment, I should add that I am very sorry for all the Ten support staff that may be affected by this axing. But surely this can only be described as a positive move for Ten inasmuch as it was a non-performing product with a grating host and almost anything else will be an improvement..

  3. So happy!
Was there ever a ‘personality’ that has so alienated people from the very outset? I can’t think of one. And yet, despite the deafening howls of protest on this site and elsewhere at the very idea of putting that man on our screens, the Large Brains at Ten persisted with what every indicator screamed was a dreadful idea. At what point does commitment and bravery become utter pig-headedness and stupidity? Who is responsible for this fiasco and will they also be boned? Buried somewhere at Ten is a real scoop awaiting a real investigative reporter.

@David K – Be at peace, this is indeed a “positive yarn”!

  4. Breakfast was terrible. However it is sad that all these people at TEN have lost their jobs. TEN have done this to themselves, they just don’t listen to viewers.

Hopefully all the kids programs move back to the morning timeslots: Scope, Toasted TV, Lightning Point, Totally Wild etc.

  5. Well scooped, young man.

I note with interest that the Australian Media site (at the time of this post – 10.21am) has yet to run the story.

Funny thing about Murdoch blood, isn’t it…?

  6. Finally, Ten axes Breakfast! What great news, finally we’ll be rid of Paul Henry. Ten would have been much better off if they’d have axed Breakfast sooner and kept The Circle, moving it to an earlier timeslot.

  7. A deeply troubled network indeed. Perhaps they should have tried to replace their host??!!!instead of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. I used to enjoy their weather report that was a weather report and not an excuse for the so called weather person to flap their egos across the countryside. The rest was pretty hard to watch . they need to revisit it with a different host. But why axe the news? It seems to be the one thing on that network that works no matter what time of day.

  8. what a shocker… lol.

Now do it right. return it next year with a better set maybe similar to sunrise and have it on the streets. it will attract more people.

bring Andrew Rochford back team him Natarsha Belling and Gorgi Coghlan and you might just have a winner.

  9. What does it take to get rid of a low rent, low rating offering hosted by a jackass Kiwi
Axe everything and anyone but him until you finally admit the bloody obvious
Sadly the axe should fall on those who made the decision in the first place!!!!!

  10. Wow this is a shock. Just as Breakfast was getting on average 50k viewers they axe it. It will be interesting to see what it is replaced with as they already have plenty of American talk/panel shows. Perhaps Toasted TV will move back from Eleven?

  11. Many will rejoice this decision. However it offered an informative half hour from 6-6.30 while having my Breakfast. I know Paul could be inappropriate at times with his views, but the whole team has gelled.
I see other male hosts of this genre to be more annoying hence why I had switched to 10.
    Thanks anyway 10!

  12. Management is slaying anything and everything at Ten. I really enjoyed Paul henry, especially when he cracked himself up! So who is next? Can of worms I think. I would not like to be working for them. The tension would be unbearable not knowing.
