A special episode of Compass will screen in December, as Geraldine Doogue investigates the child sexual abuse crisis in Australian churches.
20 years ago Compass lifted the lid on clerical sexual abuse in Australia with a shocking film called ‘The Ultimate Betrayal’.
It was dismissed as “just unthinkable!” by churches, the public and media. Two decades and several ground-breaking documentaries later, Compass charts the full saga of child sexual abuse crisis in Australian churches that has led to the PM’s Royal Commission announcement.
Along the way it revisits key people who have been part of the unfolding story, and through them examines the dramatically shifting attitude in Australian public opinion from denial to recognition to acknowledgement. Finally, Compass highlights the debates prompted within the churches and their efforts, successful and otherwise, to answer victims’ calls for justice.
