Gone: Emily Owens MD

TEN pulls its third fast-tracked show from schedule and replaces it with The Good Wife.

Ben and Kate, The New Normal, Emily Owens MD….

TEN has pulled its third fast-tracked show from schedules with medical drama Emily Owens MD out of schedule from tomorrow.

It will be replaced with a second episode of The Good Wife.

Last week the show only managed 187,000 viewers.

The show stars Mamie Gummer, real-life daughter of Meryl Streep, and Justin Hartley.

TEN Programming Chief Beverley McGarvey recently advocated a consistent schedule for advertisers and audiences, but also acknowledging if a show did not resonate the network would have to act.

  1. According to Aryan3 at the MediaSpy forums, Emily Owens has not been pulled from the schedule. The Good Wife double was a one off and Emily Owens returns next week.

It makes sense as Emily Owens was on a 2 week break in the US from October 30th and only returned last night.

It’s the same with Law and Order SVU, which had a two week break in the US. Ten were meant to show a new episode tonight but have pulled it at the last moment and replaced it with a repeat because the episode they were meant to show only aired today in the US.

  2. @ tclark26 – Total viewer numbers in Australia are crucial, but are irrelevant in the US. There it is about how shows rate in the 18-49 demo. As a case in point, Harry’s Law on NBC had the highest viewer numbers amongst all their unscripted shows but was cancelled because it did poor in the demos.

@ Josh777 – Vegas’s numbers have drifted sharply since it was picked up for the full season into borderline territory, if they erode any further it certainly won’t return for a 2nd season.

  3. I never saw a full episode, but,
what I did see was okay.
    I didn’t see “Grey’s Anatomy” so I can’t compare.
But I’ve seen a lot of other hopsital dramas
over the years (“St Elsewhere”, “ER”, “House)

What I did see of this show, I always felt it could do better. It might improve in time.

The lead actress was okay (imo).

So, I, for one, am a bit disappointed with Ch 10 for dropping this & if it gets axed in the US, that’s a shame. It could have improved with time.

  4. @ Johnny1P5 – I personally prefer TV.com as they offer more insight. Below is a link to last years renewed/bubble/cancellation list. They said Make It Or Break It, Leverage, and Merlin were all on the bubble yet 2 of the 3 have gone 2 more seasons (with Make It Or Break It only being renewed for half a season to end the series). I refuse to look at on the bubble predictions as although the viewers and reviewers may believe a show will get renewed/cancelled, you never actually know what the networks will do (look at CSI NY being the lowest rating of the CSI franchise yet they cancelled CSI Miami this year in favour of NY). tv.com/news/whats-renewed-whats-canceled-and-whats-still-in-between-2011-edition-25402/

  5. CBS ordered a full season of the Good Wife. So it isn’t going to be cancelled yet. At worst it would be moved.

However last week it generated 9.69m Live + Same Day viewers. It is also critically acclaimed and has had 21 Emmy nominations. It’s numbers are down a bit but hardly critically.

  6. Things would not be any different if Ten had promoted this show. First, you have to have an audience to promote to and second, people would have worked out that this show was horrible with an unsympathetic lead after the first ep.

Good on Ten for going with the fast-tracking but that will only be effective for shows that generate significant on-line discussion. For programs such as this, the benefit is negligible and prob not even measurable amongst the statistical noise.

  7. @tclark26 and Josh777:

I am going by the list on TV By The Numbers, that as of November 11th has Vegas as Likely Cancellation, The Good Wife as On The Bubble, not my call on those shows, just saying what is being talked of in the US itself by the industry (and TV By The Numbers is usually spot-on).

  8. Wow I really enjoyed the pilot for Emily Owens but haven’t yet watched the other episodes. I might wait to see what it’s future is in the U.S. before watching any more.
@ Johnny1P5 – I couldn’t disagree more. The Good Wife has atleast 1-2 more seasons ahead of it being one of CBS’s best crime dramas, and Vegas was renewed for a full season only last month implying that it will likely also get a season renewal, Last Man Standing is still pulling good figures in the U.S. (with season’s two’s aired episodes receiving better figures than the second half of season one) so if it is cancelled it will atleast air the entire second season.

  9. Johnny1P5, I disagree that the Goodwife is on the verge of cancelation. While this season (S4) has had the lowest ratings and does not get the numbers of other CBS shows such as Person of Interest, it is acheiving figures from 8-10 million. I believe this is a relatively good figure for this current time. Other series such as Once Upon a Time, Revenge and Greys Anatomy (which will probably get a season renewal) are getting similar figures.

  10. Why this under-hyped, unknown, small US network show was fast-tracked and the cult, big name stars, Emmy award winning new season of American Horror Story was not is beyond me.

  11. Emily Owens MD is on the verge of being cancelled in the US, as is Ben And Kate and Vegas, also The Good Wife is on the bubble over there along with Last Man Standing (The New Normal is safe though).

TEN may have to start bringing shows from Eleven over like Raising Hope, Supernatural as quite a number of shows (like those) on Eleven have been renewed already (Hawaii Five-0 and the NCIS’s are all TEN may have left soon that have survived US cancellation).

  12. I didn’t like the show much either and only watched the first episode, was like they took the ditzy Lawyer character Mamie plays on and off in The Good Wife and made her a Doctor. That type of character was okay in small doses on The Good Wife, however to carry a show with it was a bit too much to ask for mine.

  13. I’m really not surprised. I usually like medical shows but this one is a real disappointment. The character of Emily is so annoying – she may be a brilliant doctor but her personality sucks! I have the third episode recorded but may delete it unwatched, and I rarely do that
