Seven factuals best on a quiet night

Ratings: There wasn't a lot of action on Wednesday night, unless you count Seven's factual double.

There wasn’t a lot of action on Wednesday night, unless you count Seven’s factual double early in the evening. The numbers were arguably more volatile in Breakfast TV land.

Seven Network was 33.6% then Nine 24.5%, TEN 18.5%, ABC 18.0% and SBS 5.4%.

The Force was #1 for the night with 1.25m viewer. Also for Seven were Highway Patrol (1.15m), Seven News (1.11m), Today Tonight (997,000), Dynamo: Magician (909,000), Home and Away (901,000), World’s Wildest Police Videos (537,000), Deal or No Deal (471,000) and Air Crash Investigations (285,000).

Nine could not crack the million mark with Nine News best on 949,000 then A Current Affair (817,000), Big Bang (639,000),  Big Fat Gypsy Weddings (569,000), Hot Property (568,000), Embarrassing Bodies (523,000) and Hot Seat (511,000).

Modern Family (654,000) was best for TEN then Glee (604,000). TEN News was 600,000, The Good Wife was 508,000, The Project 6pm was 377,000. Emily Owens MD was even lower than Huey’s Kitchen, on just 194,000. Expect another switcheroo.

ABC News won its timeslot on 1.04m viewers for ABC1 followed by 7:30 (743,000), Qi (677,000), A Moody Christmas (570,000), Problems (403,000), Red Dwarf (326,000) and At the Movies (289,000).

Best for SBS ONE was Monster Bug Wars (218,000) Toughest Place to be A (194,000) and World News Australia (159,000).

Heartbeat topped multichannels with 250,000.

Sunrise: 429,000
Today: 341,000
ABC News Breakfast: 45,000 / 33,000
Breakfast: 40,000

  1. @TM

    My thinking is this.

The ABC (older) demographic is more inclined to watch a long-standing British comedy than an edgy new Australian show, and the demographic go to bed early. Problems gives them no incentive to stay up. I think Red Dwarf would do better earlier.

Using your principle, about putting shows together on a country-of-origin basis, I’d be very happy to put Red Dwarf on at 8.30 straight after QI. (Although that won’t make me watch QI)

  2. My apologies – I was clearly brain-challenged when posting this morning. Funny is indeed a subjective thing.

And I have been sticking with Moody Christmas, only out of loyalty to Phil Lloyd, who is very funny indeed. (As is Anthony Morgan, or at least, used to be).

  3. Also @Dr_Rudi outing Red Dwarf between AMC and Problems doesn’t make sense as you would be sticking a UK sci-fi spoof comedy of a completely different style in between two local suburban based comedies. I would argue that this would result in even worse numbers overall for ABC. IMHO.

  4. I wasn’t home for most of it but most of you forgot 11’s Simpsons/Futurama/Cleveland Show Wednesday Cartoon Night as an alternative to the factuals elsewhere.

  5. A Moody Christmas was flat this week – a shame because week 3 was hilarious.

Problems I quite enjoyed, escpially the line “Sand Sluts” in the Trivia Contest.

  6. @Secret Squirrel & Dr Rudi:
Hmm. Two posters I usually agree with have diametrically opposed opinions. I’m somewhere in between. I watched all Aunty’s offerings last night and while, as usual, I enjoyed QI the most, I did get some LOL moments from Problems. The moths were good, Anthony Morgan was good (I could listen to him read the phone book) and the main schtick about the Tacos was okay. Several parts dragged: Ultra Phil, the delirious ‘walk in the mexican desert/racism bit’ and the ‘craft’ shop segment. All a bit laboured imho. But I’ll be back.
BTW – The Squirrel is right, humour is subjective.

  7. Actually, it’s subjective, and I found “Problems” to be more amusing than “A Moody Christmas” and (sad to say) “Red Dwarf”. I agree that absurdist humour is not most people’s cup of Marmite but I’ll be back next week.

  8. I appreciate that ‘funny’ is an objective thing, and I can’t imagine too many of the 400,000 returning for week 2 of Problems. The ABC would be better served by screening Red Dwarf before Problems.
