Summer of Cricket on Nine: guide

Your guide to Nine's Test Series and One Day Internationals over summer.

Nine’s 36th season of cricket coverage gets underway with The Vodafone Test Series at the Gabba in Brisbane, playing South Africa for the first time in 49 years.

Nine’s Wide World of Sports will broadcast the match live from 10.30am AEDT today.

Australia will play six Tests this summer: three against South Africa, with both sides vying for the world number one title, and three against Sri Lanka, including the historic Boxing Day Test at the MCG.

There will be 10 One Day Internationals in the Commonwealth Bank Series between Australia, Sri Lanka and the West Indies, which starts on January 11 at the MCG and concludes there on February 10.

Excitement will kick up another notch when Australia play KFC T20 Internationals against Sri Lanka (January 26 and 28) and the West Indies (February 13).

The top names in the game will present Nine’s summer of cricket, led by the legendary Richie Benaud. The expert team joining him in the commentary box comprises Bill Lawry, Ian Chappell, Mark Taylor, Ian Healy, Michael Slater, Mark Nicholas and James Brayshaw.

Tony Greig, who has been an integral part of Nine’s cricket coverage since 1979, will be absent from the commentary box due to illness.

“Our thoughts remain with Tony and his health battle. The door to the Nine commentary box will always be open to him whenever he is ready to return,” Nine Network Head of Sport, Steve Crawley, said.

Australia’s great fast bowler, Glenn McGrath, will join the Wide World of Sports team for the first Test against South Africa at the Gabba, adding his expert opinion on the two pace attacks that could well determine the result. Former Australian representative player Tom Moody will return to join the live Wide World of Sports coverage of the One Day International series.

Star fast bowler Brett Lee will again team up with Michael Slater for The Cricket Show, which will be live during lunch breaks in the Vodafone Test Series. The Cricket Show includes first-session recaps, player profiles, Master Classes, international and domestic updates, viewer emails, questions and feedback.

The Nine Network not only has the best commentary team in the business, but will continue to push the envelope in sports broadcast technology for the 2012-13 Wide World of Sports summer of cricket presentation.

At the forefront of cutting-edge cricket coverage, Wide World of Sports will again deliver first-rate broadcast technology. The Nine Network will integrate dynamic, commentator hand-held tablet and touch screen technology into the cricket broadcast. 1. Cricket = zzzzzzzzzzzzz

It is the perfect cure for insomnia I think but for the people who like it they should be able to see it in HD what is the point of HD if they aren’t going to show HD coverage of sport

  2. For me I’m not watching Nine’s Wide World Of Sports coverage of the Cricket. Come on TEN or Seven get the rights that way we won’t have to watch it in blurry SD

  3. @Kylie that’s what I want as well. Id prefer it on 12-2pm. I can’t always watch Ellen at 5pm. Its just annoying that they don’t make better use of GEM when the cricket is on.

  4. Memo ABC24 – If you are going to run the cricket scores on your newsbar at least keep it reasonably up-to-date. “1 for 90 at lunch” when it’s 2 for 202 at 4:30pm. Please?????
Or is that some way of teasing us to switch to Nine to get the real score, and perhaps stay there???

  5. So why can’t they move Ellen and The View to GEM from 12-2pm when the cricket is on!!

Ellen is on at 5pm on GEM anyway, so logic says to put The View on at 4pm – especially this week with the election – I need to see the catfights!!

  6. The reason why they have said if it will be on gem when the news is on is that they just dont know until the last minute but if it does they have to by law now show every ball live now it is called a anit-siphioning list

  7. The Gabba always holds the opening test, the actual line from ch9’s blurb is “Australia plays South Africa in a Test at the Gabba in Brisbane for the first time in 49 years”.

  8. The toss is at 10:30am EDT. That means the cricket will likely run past 6pm. Channel 9 haven’t said whether it will be on Gem when the news is on, though it isn’t listed in the guides.

“At the forefront of cutting-edge cricket coverage, Wide World of Sports will again deliver first-rate broadcast technology.” means viewers can watch the cricket in SD till the news starts and then listen on ABC AM radio!

  9. “but will continue to push the envelope in sports broadcast technology for the 2012-13 Wide World of Sports summer of cricket presentation.
At the forefront of cutting-edge cricket coverage, Wide World of Sports will again deliver first-rate broadcast technology. ”

lol, yet none will be in HD
