He replaces outgoing Mark Boyd who will depart SBS in February 2013 to return to New Zealand with his family.

Caroll spent 11 years at TEN before he quit in June 2011 after the network’s failed News relaunch, but he remains respected for the achievements including Walkley Award nominations for TEN,  and major coverage of the Beaconsfield mine disaster, Black Saturday bushfires, Queensland floods and the Japanese Tsunami.

Previously he was a senior news and current affairs executive at the Nine and Seven Networks.

SBS Managing Director Michael Ebeid said: “World News Australia is the only local news bulletin with a real focus on world events which gives Australians an in-depth insight into news and events from across the world through an Australian lens.

“Jim’s extensive experience and expertise in news and current affairs will be invaluable to SBS as we continue to build on the esteemed reputation of World News Australia and seek to broaden our reach and impact across the platforms and devices our audiences are choosing to use.”

SBS Director of News and Current Affairs Paul Cutler said: “We are delighted to welcome Jim on board. His exceptional record in managing newsrooms and building quality editorial teams will be invaluable in leading World News Australia.

“With a new set and format introduced this year, a high-calibre team producing distinctive news and content and a growing emphasis of multi-platform delivery, it’s an exciting time for World News Australia and Jim will play an important role in its next stage of growth.

“I thank Mark Boyd for his outstanding contribution to daily news at SBS over the past 10 years. The high quality of journalism within the team is a result of his dedication and stewardship.”

Carroll aded: “I am excited to be joining SBS at this important time in the Australian media sector when the ways our audiences engage with news and current affairs demands a commitment to innovation and brave content that gets people thinking about the world we live in.

“It is a real honour to step into a leadership role with such a respected news service and I am determined to ensure that we continue to make a difference to Australians through the most accurate and informative coverage of national and international news and events.”
