tgreFormer cricketer and veteran Nine commentator Tony Greig has died aged 66, following a heart attack.

He was rushed to St Vincent’s hospital. It is understood his family were with him when he died.

In a statement his wife said: “Our family wants to extend our gratitude for the support and condolences we have received and would ask for privacy at this very sad time.”

Greig, 66, had also been battling lung cancer. He first became aware he had a problem during Australia’s one-day series against Pakistan in August. Initially diagnosed with bronchitis in May, the condition lingered. Tests later revealed a small lesion at the base of his right lung.

Last month he told the Channel Nine commentary team, “It’s not good. The truth is I’ve got lung cancer. Now it’s a case of what they can do.”

South African born Greig made his mark in international cricket, including 58 Tests between 1972 and 1977, and leading England in 14 Tests.

He was recruited for Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket revolution. The controversial move was rewarded with a “job for life” by Packer becoming a key broadcaster in cricket commentary.

Today David Gyngell, CEO Nine Entertainment Co. said, “It is a deeply upsetting time for his family and for…. many, many others who came to know and love the man.”

James Packer said, “Our cricket enemy turned our mate … Tony stood shoulder to shoulder with my father at times when it was not always fashionable.”

Nine will run a special on Greig at 6:30pm.
