Returning: Misfits

Is it fair to say that Misfits has jumped the shark?

2misfIs it fair to say that Misfits has jumped the shark?

Only one of the original gang of 5, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (Curtis), returns for Season 4, which begins tonight on ABC2.

Joseph Gilgun (Rudy) and Matthew McNulty (Seth) are also back but none were in the original cast, joining the supernatural series later.

They are joined by Karla Crome (Jess) and Nathan McMullen (Finn).

The award-winning Misfits have rebooted and resuited for another chaotic, action packed series that includes a killer white rabbit and even the odd zombie. New guys Finn and Jess join old favourites Rudy, Curtis and Seth for a cheekier, more power-crazed Series 4. It’s time to power up. But do the new Misfits have any new A-list powers?

Well, kind of. Jess has X-ray vision and Finn has telekinesis – although he finds it a challenge to move even a cup of tea. And keeping our gang on the straight and narrow, or at least trying to, is new probation worker Greg with a set of warped moral guidelines and an incredibly short fuse.

Episode One – Tuesday, January 8 on ABC2 at 9.30pm
New gang members Finn and Jess zip up those iconic orange jumpsuits for their first day of community service and meet their probation worker…or is it in fact Rudy pretending to be their probation worker? Things get stranger still when a man stumbles in to the community centre with a briefcase full of money, and a power that infects them all. The truth unravels in a series of tense flashbacks and it soon becomes clear to Finn and Jess that there’s more to community service than scrubbing off graffiti and picking up litter…

Cast includes: Joseph Gilgun (Rudy), Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (Curtis), Matthew McNulty (Seth), Karla Crome (Jess), Nathan McMullen (Finn), Matt Stokoe (Alex), Shaun Dooley (Greg) and Natasha O’Keeffe (Abby)

Tuesday, January 8 at 9.30pm ABC2.

  1. This show really isn’t that good anymore – Nathan leaving really set the series back. You guys who are saying its still worth watching have probably not seen the rest of the season as the first 2 episodes are ok but the rest are rather mediocre. Especially the plot with the Alex character and his special ‘condition’.

Jess and Finn are good characters but ehhh I’m so done with this show. I agree with HardcorePrawn this was one cast change too many – Simon and Alisha should not have been killed off

  2. Stick with it – although admiteddly not as good as last season the new characters (with a couple more to follow) settle in quite nicely and they just about get away with it. It’s a bit on the quiet side but that allows the character side of Finn and Jess to develop to the point where we do care about them when random stuff happens.

  3. This episode was as well written as anything Overman has done. No sign of the shark as of yet.

It used the characters and setting brilliantly to tell a story that combined elements of Pulp Fiction (non-linear story telling and a brief-case McGuffin) and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (themes of greed and paranoia and their resulting in the treasure blowing away in the wind) with a great unreliable narrator twist thrown in. And it had some great chase music.

Season 3 was a bit uneven. Some mediocre Rudy episodes but the great Get Hitler, Zombie Apocalypse and end of the Simon and Alisha story episodes.

Curtis became unpregnant when became entirely male again because his power to change sex was replaced with the ability to reanimate the dead. That was in episode #3.7

  4. The show has gone from brilliant to pretty good; you can tell that some of the plots are only on their first draft and were rushed to screen … starts feeling like a lot of US dramas.

I won’t be spoiling much at all to reveal that Curtis’s subplot with the pregnancy is not mentioned at all in this series. Which is a shame, because it had potential to put him in a really sticky situation. An obvious opportunity passed up.

  5. I think it’s done sadly. I watched the first few eps but gave up. The two new cast aren’t bad but it’s just not the same. Will watch the rest on ABC2 though.

  6. I felt series 3 was a decent bough out. Can’t say I’m too fussed about checking out season 4. (And as an aside, the Misfits app was the worst game-app I’ve ever played).

  7. Like Skins before it (another E4 show), this might be one cast change too many. However, Karla Crome was excellent in Hit & Miss, and the introduction of Joseph Gilgun’s Rudy worked very well in the last series, so it’s definitely worth giving it another look I’d say.
