Tropfest will now be broadcast on the same night as the festival -on SBS ONE.

2013-01-31_1643SBS has signed a deal to broadcast Tropfest next month.

The long-running short film festival previously partnered with the now-defunct Movie Network and Nine before it.

For the first time ever Tropfest will be broadcast on the same night as the festival, 8:30pm Sunday 17th February on SBS ONE.

Tony Iffland, SBS Director of TV and Online Content said: “Tropfest is one of the most prestigious film events in Australia, and the world. I’m delighted to have signed this deal to bring Tropfest to SBS and to support the Australian creative filmmaking industry. With SBS’s reputation and credentials for showing the best in Australian and world film, Tropfest is the perfect fit for our audiences.”

Tropfest creator John Polson said: “We’re incredibly excited to be welcoming SBS into the Tropfest family, with their eclectic mix of quality programs we feel it’s a great partnership with what Tropfest is all about. Over the years there have been many exceptional Tropfest finalists and winners, like Jason Gann and Paul Fenech, that have gone on to have successful series on SBS, so this is a really natural home for us.”

This year’s Tropfest Signature Item is “Balloon”. Finalists will be announced on February 5.

  1. So you admit the ethnic audience is part of multiculture and part of your charter then why have you abonden this group . The only ethnic programmes on sbs are your news and the odd asian film. Where are your greek itlalian turkish lebanese and french movies and tv shows just to name a few cultures.By the way your definition of multicultural is pretty lame its like julia gillards definition of mysogyny.

    1. I have not abandoned anybody because I am not SBS. Check today’s Programmers Wrap and you will see a return to foreign language is confirmed in both drama and film. Many of the films you mention have still been on SBS TWO.

  2. What a waste of tax payers money .sbs is suppose to be the multicultural network . There. Is nothing multicultural about showing tropfest . How about sticking to your charter SBS and cater for the viewers you get given funding for . You are suppose to provide programming for multicultural australia .i.e movies and shows in foreign language for Your targeted viewers. Your not the ABC . Just a poor imitation of it ..

    1. A reminder that multicultural is actually more than ethnic. Culture embraces ethnic, senior, youth, gays, disabled etc. all of which could be included in TF films in theory. Wilfred and Paul Fenech both emerged via Tropfest before becoming SBS properties.
