Coronation Street actor on child sex charges

Michael Le Vell, who plays garage boss Kevin Webster for 30 years is written out -but he wants to move to Oz.

2013-02-25_0058Coronation Street star Michael Le Vell, who plays garage boss Kevin Webster in the television soap for 30 years, was recently charged with a string of sexual offences against a child, including rape.

Police said the 48-year-old actor had been charged with 19 offences “including raping a child, indecently assaulting a child and sexual activity with a child”. The charges relate to offences against a child between 2001 and 2010,

He was charged under his real name, Michael Robert Turner.

Despite vowing to clear his name, Le Vell has been written out of Coronation Street by ITV.

“I’m innocent of these charges and intend to fight them vigorously,” he defended.

The Mirror quotes a source saying he wants to relocate in Australia.

“Michael has been hit for six by the charges. He feels that whatever happens he has nothing left in the UK,” they said.

“He understands why Corrie suspended him but there is no hiding the fact he’s been hurt by their actions.

“He is starting to think this would be a good time to draw a line under his time on the Cobbles.”

The source added: “Michael loves Australia and would love to live out there. He has told his friends he has not been so relaxed in years as he was when he was Down Under.

“Whatever happens, he just wants a new start. He thinks he could have that in Australia.”

  1. @BarrieT – From ITV News ” Greater Manchester Police said the actor, from Hale, Cheshire, had been charged with sex offences against a youngster after a review of evidence by lawyers from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).” “I have very carefully reviewed the evidence in this case and I have concluded that there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest to charge Michael Robert Turner with a number of sexual offences. I have authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge Mr Turner with 19 offences, including rape of a child”.– Alison Levitt, QC, Principal Legal Advisor to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

    Two entirely different “stories”.

  2. That’s the second one from Coronation Street in recent times to face such charges. Andrew Lancel (who played Frank Foster, and prior to that D.I. Manson in The Bill) faces trial in June.

Corrie’s producers must be more than a tad frustrated at seeing their show’s name associated with the charges all over again, although I’d imagine it’s worse for the alleged victims and alleged offenders.
