Soft Thursday apart from MKR

Ratings: The Block struggles in Adelaide and Perth, American Idol languishes on TEN.

2013-02-15_1025The first Thursday of the ratings year proved to be relatively soft with the exception of My Kitchen Rules. Only two shows topped the magic million, being MKR and Nine News.

The Block struggles in Adelaide and Perth, American Idol languishes on TEN and ABC1’s Making Couples Happy has a middling premiere.

Seven network shares were 34.7% then Nine 25.7%, TEN 16.8%, ABC 16.4% and SBS 6.3%.

  1. I agree with mellowman – had my TiVo not recorded the episode of SVU I wouldn’t have realised the series started back! On that note the TiVo (I don’t know what it was in the guide) described the episode as “This episode is so seriously fast tracked this weeks episode details are still under investigation and remain top secret” curious about this statement I checked. Interesting to see that this episode was aired on the 14 Novemeber in the US… I don’t know what “seriously fast tracked” is but I’m pretty sure 3 months isn’t it… Sorry, rant over.

  2. Are we seeing the start of reality TV fatigue. Idol, The Block and Masterchef are showing soft numbers.People cannot follow all these shows as they consume so much time. MKR, BB, AGT Xfactor,Biggest Loser,The Voice are others that depend on great talent to succeed, and surely the talent pool must be drying up. The biggest loser should be ok as we will never run out of overweight people but not so sure about the singing shows.

  3. I’ve never been a fan of American Idol , but I’m really enjoying this season.
Nicki Minaj is very entertaining and there are some quirky contestants who are a lot of fun. I hope Zoanette is still there for a while yet.

  4. Ten keeps on making the same mistake year after year and don’t learn …….

American idol – more reality television …… after a horror year of bad reality television that didn’t work ……….

They didn’t learn …… they deserve to go under …….

  5. You didn’t mention one of Ten’s highest rating shows. Bold and the Beautiful got 397k metro viewers. That’s more than either The Simpsons or Idol.

  6. I think American Idol will pick up once the live shows start.

The Block is ok, but I don’t know if I’ll feel like watching another series after this one.

  7. Maybe The Block performed badly due to it being a lazy tired lame reality product placement TV show?

Could it be that audiences are switching off to this?

  8. David, you’ve mentioned the ratings for 7, 9, & the ABC for their breakfast programs.

How has TEN faired with their current format at the same time? Have the ratings gone up for 10 in the mornings now they’ve dropped their Breakfast show?

  9. Well have we given the team at Ten enough time yet. The ratings are starting to make Ten look like a multichannel !

Simpsons 300,000 viewers – should have stayed on Eleven.

  10. David I wholeheartedly agree, we do not need a reality channel. It was good to see Fast Forward last night…some are great..some not so great….but on the whole entertaining.

  11. Long Term Survivor Fan who has been watching it by other means due to 9’s lack of respect for viewers in not showing it quickly after it airs in the US. They finally deicde to show it hours after the US but I didn’t watch it. Firstly it was competing with MKR and The Block. Secondly I don’t have a lot of faith that they will continue to show it so quickly after the US.
I also think the poor numbers could be the result of many people not knowing it was.

  12. Who would have thought airing Season 472 of an overseas reality show in primetime on a struggling primary network wouldnt bring in record numbers?

There’s a reason Survivor is on GO.

Does anyone think a multichannel dedicated to reality shows would work? I think it would. Have new eps in primetime, and re-runs during the day. I would love to re-watch, say, the US Survivor season set in Australia if it were 6pm weeknights. Maybe a current US or UK BB season might work at sat 11pm on this reality network?

  13. Sorta got the idea from the Sbs mining show, that Western Australia is pretty distinct.Seems at one time,New Zealand was more likely to enter federation than WA.Then another poster made mention of some newsreader’s Perth accent..lol..didn’t know there was one.So while I’ve never been there,or know much about it,I know one thing.Perth sure doesn’t like watching channel 9,and Seven will likely be top dog for a long time cause that doesn’t seem likely to change anytime soon.

  14. I think Law and Order SVU was low because most people didn’t know it was a new episode. I didn’t know until I turned it on, I hadn’t seen any promos for it.

  15. The 7News Special was good and deserved more in Melb the heart of footy. However, it is only Mid Feb and people havent warmed to football yet regardless how explosive the story.

  16. Really dislike the block- I don’t watch it it’s so fake I’m sure the complete work is really done by contractors for the show so really I don’t understand the point they’re probably just giving ideas which anyone can really do and sorry but I also can’t stand the host Shelley she just really annoys me too. Sad to see American Idol with the low ratings I’m really enjoying the show this time around hoping it picks up when they go to the studio performances rounds.

  17. I could see those low ratings coming for American Idol, it’s not right for the primary channel, it is better suited to Eleven being such an aging format and an import.
Good to see Neighbours picking up ground in the top multi-channel show. The show has seen a big improvement in story lines recently, and the return of former cast members is definitely helping.
