2013-03-01_1143UK adventure series Sinbad has been axed after airing only one season.

The series based on the classic hero starred Elliot Knight, Naveen Andrews and Sophie Okonedo and aired in Australia on ABC1 after originally being planned for a run on Nine.

In a statement Sky1 said: “As a broad, family entertainment channel, Sinbad was the perfect drama to showcase Sky1’s ambitions for long-running, blockbuster series. We were thrilled with the cast and the production team at Impossible, however, we feel that Sinbad’s story has now been told.”

According to media reports producers Impossible Pictures had a team of writers plotting a potential second season and the axing comes ahead of a US screening on Syfy.

  1. Not surprising. I thought it had already been cancelled.

It was an add show with a bizarre tone. At times it seemed to embrace the camp, tongue-in-cheek qualities of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, but at other times it seemed they were trying to echo Game of Thrones.

I am looking forward to the new Greek mythology themed Atlantis from the same people behind Merlin – with the same liberal dose of hoyay!

  2. Like others, I found the acting ‘wanting’. Still, I hope all the producers and writers out there in TV-land don’t consign this tale to the vaults. Sinbad, and other classic tales, offer so much potential.

  3. I’m surprised that it took this long to come to this
conclusion. As a mythology fan, I hated this
presentation right from the start. Poor casting & drab presentation didn’t help. either. Wasn’t this series hailed as an Irish production at the start?
Despite the richness of the genre, this show came
across as severely tedious to me… I had hoped for
    much more.

  4. It seemed like none of the actors quite found the tone of the show. Some were cheesing it up and chewing the scenery, some were playing it straight, the visual effects set pieces were clumsily jammed in, plus the bad guys never had very convincing motivations.

Still, I thought the same during the first season of Merlin and look how great that turned out.

  5. Not too surprised. I had high hope as I’ve been a fan of the character ever since seeing The Golden Voyage of Sinbad with sublime Ray Harryhausen effects. The most glaring problem with this current effort was quite simply the woeful miscasting of the main characters which is an insurmountable problem from which you can’t recover. I hope this doesn’t scare off producers in future having another crack at this memorable character.

  6. Good. What could of been a genuinely interesting mythical series, was turned into a corny and plain stupid abomination. It was worse then Hercules and Xena combined!
