Bonnie Tyler to represent UK at Eurovision

The UK has again opted for celebrity to spearhead its entry in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest with Bonnie Tyler.

2013-03-08_0040The United Kingdom has again opted for celebrity to spearhead its entry in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest with Bonnie Tyler to represent their hopes.

61-year-old Tyler, best known for Total Eclipse of the Heart and Holding out for a Hero, will perform Believe In Me — a power ballad written by Desmond Child, Lauren Christy and Christopher Braide.

It follows previous UK entries from Engelbert Humperdinck, Blue, Josh Dubovie and Jade Ewan with Andrew Lloyd Webber (it finished 5th with the latter act, its best performance since 2002).

“I am truly honoured and delighted to be able to represent my country at Eurovision and especially with such a fabulous song. I promise to give this everything that I’ve got for the UK,” said Tyler.

But the bookies have already set her odds at 40-1.

The number of countries not joining in during this fiscally tight climate is now around 11.

Eurovision screens place in mid-May on SBS.

  1. Sorry for coming across so sarcastically, Secret Squirrel, but your comment implied the UK wouldn’t make the finals, when in reality they automatically qualify.

    “Secret Squirrel March 8, 2013 at 2:23 pm –

None of this will help the UK get thru to the finals tho’.”

  2. Dear Secret Squirrel.

Have you been watching Eurovision since, oh, I don’t know, 1999?
The UK, Spain France, Germany and now Italy automatically qualify for the finals. Because they are the biggest financial contributors to the ESC. :ast year’s winner also gets to leapfrog into the final. (In this case, Sweden).

Everyone else has to duke it out in the semis.

  3. David, it’s a minor point but I agree with callas. “Holding Out for a Hero” might have rated two positions higher in the UK but only ever achieved Silver Certification. “Its a Heartache” achieved Gold in the UK and US and was a much bigger hit around the world (peaking at 1, 2, or 3 in all the major charts bar UK).

None of this will help the UK get thru to the finals tho’.

  4. Once again, the BBC have completely missed the mark with this. Its not as bad as last years disaster with Humperdink, but its hard to see it troubling the Top 10.
Ireland for me this year, its a dance song, so may not translate live, but its fantastic!
Germany are sending Cascada, but the song is a bit ho-hum.
Only 2 and a bit months to go…Yay!

  5. Change Tyler to Humperdinck..find 4 british grannies as backup,dress them all in gossamer,including engelbert,put in a wind machine,and there’s your winner
