Time Team about to become history

Long-running factual series Time Team is now coming to a close in the UK after almost 20 years.

2ttmLong-running factual series Time Team, which was axed as a series by Channel 4 in October is now coming to a close in the UK after almost 20 years.

In recent years ratings for the show, which once pulled in an audience of 2.5 million in the UK, have dropped.

Host Tony Robinson told the Radio Times: “I’m quite philosophical. They’ve treated me pretty well.”

But he later said: “I am a bit frustrated.

“The series we’ve just made is one of the best.”

However the show, which has been exported to more than 36 countries, will resurface in one-off specials.

In recent years Robinson has also filmed documentaries in Australia for the History Channel.

ABC is expected to the final season of Time Team in May.

  1. It will run on cable forever.

The international distribution has only included the regular episodes though, and not the specials and clipshows on particular themes.

  2. @JimboJones Not Yorkshire (which is up north) but Wiltshire and Bristol (which are down in the southwest). The stereotypical piratical/rural accents that Phil Harding has are always from around that area (Somerset, Cornwall, etc).

  3. I love this show,l especially the Yorkshire guy who said things like, “ooh, aar, ‘ere’s a piece of Roman pottery” (in a thick Yorkshire accent, obviously).

My favourite episode was when one of the female archaeologists said, “sometimes they were so desperate for food they would even eat beaver”.

  4. Another truly wonderful piece of TV bites the dust. I guess that instead of educational shows which engage the viewer and inspire thought, we need more reality TV?

  5. The saddest part is Prof Mick Aston quit in disgust at the end of last season, because of the changes they made to the team, where they added in a couple of people who really felt out of place, so he didn’t make it to the end – and yet both those team members were removed in this last season anyway.
