2013-03-14_1545Defunct TV series Veronica Mars may be about to get its own feature film and it’s all due to the fans.

Creator Rob Thomas has turned to crowd-funding website Kickstarter to ask for pledges for his project.

Kickstarter asks the public to pledge for projects but the monies are not due unless the target is reached.

The Veronica Mars film has already reached $2.4m, making history by passing its $2m pledged in 10 hours.

Thomas admits he laughed when a friend first suggested the idea, but it stayed with him.

“That seemed like a silly idea in the moment. We’d need millions. But for the next few weeks, the notion was never far from my mind,” he writes.

“I started doing the proverbial back-of-a-cocktail-napkin math. The average pledge on Kickstarter is $71. Hell, if we could get 30,000 people to give the average donation, we could finance the movie, particularly if the cast and I were willing to work cheap. The most common donation amount on Kickstarter is $25. Surely, 80,000 of our three million viewers would find that price-point viable!”

The pledges also include plenty of bonus attractions.

For $100 pledgers receive a script, T-shirt, the digital version andthe movie poster. “Additionally, you’ll receive a Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack that includes the documentary on the making of the Veronica Mars movie, plus other exclusive bonus features not available on the digital version,” says the website.

The benefits include the premiere party, a screening for 50 guests and for $10,000 you even get a speaking part in the movie.

  1. Just an update – the total could top $5 million with less than a week to go, currently at just under $4.8m. It is open to Australia and other countries so any fan’s interested should contributed now.

I think the studios will add to the total but $5 million will buy them a good movie as most of the stars will be doing this for the love of the show and not for a high pay packet.

Can’t wait for it’s release marshmallows!

  2. And they don’t think this is going to be a hot download on the BT sites? I would have gladly donated $35 to get a digital copy when it’s released.

FYI just checked and the total is over $3.25 Million now, with the best part of the month to go I can see this going over $5 million, should make for an even better movie!

  3. I think the issue is less with shipping (Rob Thomas has said if it were only that they’d be happy to send everything overseas) but the fact that every donation over $35 also gets a digital copy of the film through Flixster. And since Warner Brothers still owns the rights to VMars there’s a whole bunch of licensing issues there.

  4. I’d given up all hope of a movie being made! But this is Awesome news! The final episode never really gave us much closure so a movie will be great to tie up some loose ends 🙂

  5. Love the show, bought the DVDs just wish I could donate $50 to get the DVD when it comes out, well worth it IMO.

Maybe if I set up one of those US postal address things to have it forward to me?

  6. So excited for it! One of those cancelled too soon shows. And the idea that the film will lift off at a high school reunion is just a great way to bring in so many of the characters from the first two seasons. It’s just unfortunate that the rewards are US only. I still donated but would have done more if I could get a poster or something delivered here. Lets just hope we get the film released here!
